Yeah, I liked it alot. (...so the exploration of Dead Can Dance continues) I have "Roomsounds" and "Ugly Cassanova" on order, but I believe they're backordered or something. You're getting me interested in The Silver Jews!

That Califone "Roomsound" CD has 3 extra quicktime videos on it of the band playing acoustic in a big industrial bathroom. Very cool songs and they sound great. The camera slowly pans around showing all the guys playing and the woman in the other section of the bathroom with a small mixer and recorder. Normally these "enhanced" CDs are just a nuisance or only include a silly video I could care less about, but this is real live stuff and a very worthwhile addition.

If you do feel the urge to pull the trigger on some Silver Jews, I'd definitely rec American Water. Kind of an unheralded modern day classic in my mind, and in the minds of many other like-thinkers. It was about 1998 and has the Pavement guys like the latest, although Malkmus was a little bigger part of the sound then as I don't think he was with Cassie at the time, or at least she wasn't backing his vocals like on this latest one. They're both great, but AW is the real deal and sounds very nice as a bonus. Nice analog sounding Book Room recording and Abbey Road mastering, back in the days when Abbey Road mastering still often meant something good, not something to usually stay away from like it does nowadays. A couple of the songs do sound kind of like the country side of Pavement, especially when Malkmus is singing background, but for the most part it's a unique mix of music and quirky but heartfelt poetry. And besides, Pavement never did enough of those "Range Life" type of songs to suit me.

My curiosity comes from one of your posts about "Tanglewood Numbers." I bought Stephen Malkmus' latest solo effort awhile back and didn't like it very much. I have little experience with Pavement. You think that the smart move for the Silver Jews uninitiated would be to go with "American Water?

Yeah, I remember you making a very negative comment on that latest Malkmus. It was kind of funny because my buddy Slosh from the other board loves it totally and at that time he was making the case that it was the album of the year, and better than any Pavement, etc etc. And I did wind up with a gratis copy, and can't say that I've been too impressed either, but haven't felt all that compelled to listen to it much. I did like his first solo, not much the second. And I do love most things Pavement. Those first two are like time capsules to discover what was good and charming (and even a little innocent) about a lot of indie rock in the early 90s.

But yeah, American Water is the one I'd recommend before Tanglewood. Just really a sublime grower type of album. Of course, you have to be a little into the country sound, but if you are, could be pretty special. You may wanna try to sample it first since I don't think it's much like most of the things we've talked about before. Kind of like a mix of Lou Reed and Beck and Wilco and Pavement. Some tasty, but not very long, guitar runs. Just nice and comfortable, with an earthy country folk sound, but at the same time pretty quirky. Hard to describe but there's a lot of reviews at amazon so check it out
