Yamaha hph mt220 thread (Merged)

I'm right there with you on the LCD-X. It's a very interesting headphone. Do you have any amplifiers in mind for the LCD-X?

Thanks, I might pick up the UDA-1. I'm surprised Sony is offering something like that.

In general, I like amps that don't add color. If I want a different color, I'll just use another pair of headphones. I think the sony fits that description.

@inthere mentioned that he uses "Alpha Pads" which I'm assuming are these https://mrspeakers.com/shop/3-accessories/alpha-pads-genuine-lamb-leather/

on his MT220's, and said it increases the soundstage greatly.

Someone else should report on them.  Or I might....

Buy the yams?

I have placed some rolled up cotten "make-up removal pads" (when her Light-Ness was out buying more shoes!) I cut the round pads into squares and

rolled them up tightly and tucked them in under the cushion of the ear-pads.  I think it improves things but have not bothered comparing.

My logic is to push the speaker a little further away from the ear and help absorb any reverb - just my half-pence.

What is the easiest way to mod the mt220? Is there an easy explanation (for even better sound)

Read through this thread. Unfortunately, no one has linked to all the available modifications in one post, but they all seem worthwhile.

The only one I tried was stuffing gauze under the right and left sides of the pads. (Not too much, because that makes it sound bloated.) It helps separate your ears from the drivers. Also (and this isn't really a mod), if you have smaller ears like me, you may be able to get significantly different sound by moving your ears around in the pads. It sounded the best to me when my ears were in the front.

Yeah, I kept wondering what MA meant by moving your ears forward in the pads because I have BIG ears and there IS no forward!

That's the one thing I'm not liking is that we have to move the headphones around to get a "good spot," or "mod them for better sound...."  I wonder if the Alpha pads help reduce the need for the "good spot," it seems to help greatly with sound stage, according to you.

Speaking of the alpha pads, have you tried them on the pioneer HRM-7's?

Also, I noticed from their site they looked smaller, but from all of your pics they look huge.  I was just watching a video and he mentioned only the back are bigger?  What is that about???!?!?!!? haahahahah.........???????????????????

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting both the Yammies and The Pioneer HRM-7's.

I just rather not mod the headphones, unless it's something like new earpads.  These are mentioned to be so good, but I see a lot of people wanting to "Mod" them...

You should all try the sorbothane mod. It really cleans up the mt220. It's really night and day, like standard def and high def. I was a skeptic and was really shocked when I heard the difference in refinement. Pads and all these other things don't solve the problem of "disturbing force." When you reduce the extra vibration and noise, you get a cleaner, more well defined sound. It's like $20 and takes 10 mins to do.

Interesting...  From google it seems that it's used n audio in general.

I also found some for sale for "AudioQuest" the makers of the Nighthawk, granted someone posted that the company has some sketchy products, like a 2,700$ HDMI cable... :D...

But they have the "Sorbothane" but I also see "Sorbogel"

Interesting......?

Also, where did you get yours?  It seems there are multiple kinds, I wonder if that thread has better info, but have too much of a headache to read through it all.....

Interesting tip, because I hear the Yammies RATTLE..  Does it still do that?  Just more "Controlled?"

ehehe. I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess. Then again, if your ears fill the cups, maybe you get all the advantages I did when my ears were in the front, without the setbacks. (Slightly more emphasized treble.)

You don't need to modify the MT220. It sounds excellent even without mods. Moving your ears around is hardly a mod. As we have discovered, it only even matters if your ears are on the smaller side.

I am also considering a used HRM-7. (But you're one of the few people who already knew that.) I may just end up getting a new M40x (which I used to own) instead of the HRM-7 or MT220, since I'm getting an HE6 as my main music headphone anyway.

I saw that sorbothane thread. Supposedly, it works with all headphones. Pretty nifty.

You should read the Amazon reviews for those cables. Comedy gold.

Who said they rattle? I said they rattled my skull. (But only with a particular song at high volume.)

buy the Yammies, buy the Pioneers, keep the one you like.

For sure, I just got a little annoyed at it, but it's not really a big deal tbh.   I just didn't want it to be all hardcore stuff, but I guess it's not that much from that sorbathane thread.

Moving ears around mod >(......

Yeah, I guess it depends how it fits and such.. we shall seeee....

I think you should get the HRM-7 also since you've never had it before, and you're the Pokemon Trainer of Headphones.

Why would you get the M40x over the MT220's?

Yeah, it looks really interesting, I'm doing more research now...

Check these bad boys :)

http://www.amazon.com/Isolate-It-Sorbothane-Vibration-Isolation/dp/B0042U8PE2

ID 3.1"  TBH that's pretty good.  I wonder how big the speakers are, because you don't want to cover the speakers.

Also...  They are apparently 8 oz's each, which is damn heavy!  a lb for 2... fuggetaboutit......  Back to the sheets...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0084EXBFA/ref=s9_hps_bw_g328_i2  "acoustic and vibration dampening"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LY8VAM/ref=s9_hps_bw_g328_i3 "vibration dampening sheet"  Seems like the first one is what we want.

Yeah, I saw the 2 joke ones (might have been might), but the same person, it was funny. 2700$... seriously...

I saw it when I was reading a review of the "Nighthawks" the guy said the headphones were great, but questioned "Audioquest's" integrity...  When I scrolled down to read why, he linked that, and a 370$ HDMI cable... too funny.....

It seemed like people said it vibrates a lot, or "rattles" a bit...  Idk though.

I also wanted to mention that the HIFIMAN HE6 is regarded as one of the greatest headphones out there, yet many owners modify it quite a bit. So just because a headphone's sound can be enhanced with mods doesn't mean it isn't already awesome.

Gotta live up to my reputation and catch 'em all! (I'll probably end up collecting all three in the future.)

But I already explained. I'm getting a new HE6 for $1,199. The cheaper headphone is just to have a decent closed-back. Not worried too much about its sound. And I like the way the M40x looks. Plus I wanted to own it again, to see if my opinion on it changes, since I owned it back when I had less experience.
