Hm if you can try the Fiio X7, I feel that the stock XD-05 sounds similar to that. To my ears (running coax out of my X3ii) It can compete with $4-500 DAPs like the Cayin i5.

Mojo is better, but a lot more $.  I like the XD-05 just fine - it is loud, has a lot of inputs, and is cheap enough that I leave it at work.

Does it have a similar sound signature as the Mojo but on a lower level or is the signatures fairly different from each other?

I wouldn't say better, since they have relatively different signatures.
 
 
And I'm not surprised that people would find similarities between Cayin i5 and XD-05, they share the same DAC after all.
The AK4490 gives a warm sound with a relatively good amount of details.
 
Mojo yields a flatter signature, with less bass, smoother treble and VERY good mids.
I tend to prefer the AK4490 "house of sound", unless the IEM/headphones already has a very warm signature, in which case the Mojo makes it more controlled.

I'm not sure if it's 2016 version or if that's something that exists. But they have two listings and only one said 2016 version. You need to pay and order with app on phone to get all discounts/coupons.
