Who is the best : drummer in the world?

Jack DeJohnette has not been mentioned.
Outragous rhythms. IMO the best living drummer.

Joe Morello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet as well.
Roy Haynes

as already mentioned :

Steve Gadd (love the solo on Aja)
Billy Cobham
Elvin Jones
Bill Bruford
Neil Peart
Stuart Copeland
Max Wienberg

I love watching almost any drummer, as each has
his/her own unique style.

Let me add Josh Freese to the list. While not nearly as creative as Danny Carrey (my personal favorite) is, his rhythms are incredibly tight.

Classical percussionist -- Evelyn Glennie: if you have a chance to see her, don't miss it.

Jazz drumer -- current favourite is Marilyn Mazur of the Jan Garbarek Group: saw the group earlier this year. While everyone in the group was exceptional, it was Mazur who was the show-stealer -- working inside an enclosure surrounded with maybe 30-40 different drums, gongs, and assorted percussion instrument, Mazur gave a whimsical, iridescent glow to the music.

Portrnoy is a freak of nature, and very entertaining to watch live-spit and all.

Cool name you have. Michael Franks has made some fantastic music.

Jeff "Tain" Watts anyone? I saw him live, drumming for Michael Brecker's band. Mostly a free jazz set, but he broke into hi-hat riding funk for about 3 measures at the end of a tune, super-complicated and rhythmic. One of the most badass things I've ever seen.

Regarding Ringo Starr, I always liked the following exchange (supposedly during a Beatles interview 40+ years ago):

RINGO: "I'm the best drummer in the world"

JOHN: "You're not even the best drummer in the band"

A similar sentiment goes out to Meg White of the White Stripes IMHO.

Best drummer of all time: the late Keith Moon

another vote for phil collins here... his playing adds so much emotion and suspence to the music (favs would be again, selling england by the pound and trespass).

mike portnoy - dt (crazy live performances)
danny carey - tool
sammy watson - the apex theory.. probably one of the most underrated/unrecognized drummers around.
