Tool have said many times in the past that they strongly admire King Crimson (and even did a tour with them). When Crim came together in the 80's Robert Fripp was designing such heavily intricate rythms for the band that he gave Bill Bruford a list of "rules" for his drumming. Among them was a recommendation to not use any cymbals, as cymbals use up precious high frequencies that the guitarists might like to fill. Other recommendations were "if you hear a fill, don't play it". It really says a lot about Bruford's humility that he didn't get up and leave after receiving a list like that. Anyway any Tool fan would do well to check out these three Crimson albums:

1. Starless & Bible Black (70's Crim)
2. Discipline (80's Crim)
3. The Power To Believe (00's Crim, still very much like 90's crim).

Dave Weckl and Dennis Chambers, no question!

I've had the great pleasure of seeing Rush 20-plus times and have followed them since Neil joined them in 1975 but as good as he is, Neil Peart is not even in the same category as these two mentioned above.

Antonio Sanchez from the Pat Metheny Group is phenomonal as well.

And the fact he asked Bruford if he was «ready for King Crimson».
Robert Fripp you like him or you hate him....

Amicalement,

P.S. Best drummer: a difficult one. I will say that the most inspire display of sheer talent is on the side of the jazz drummers. Wich is the true identity of Bruford. And in this spectrum I saw many years ago a breathtaking demonstration from Alphonse Mouzon, not a star by any standards, during a Larry Corryell show.

Don't know if he's the best drummer or not but I agree with you that Billy Martin is a great drummer. I've seen him a couple of times and have come to the conclusion that he has an atomic clock embedded in his brain.

Heh... is that the bandleader from Conan O'brien?

A very solid pick...this whole band is insane.

No, avoid that list. Lars Ulrich sucks worse and worse as the years go on. Few musicians get worse. He's one of them.

I'm not going to say they're the best, but the ones I find most enjoyable / fun are:

-Keith Moon (Check Live at Leeds... "Heaven and Hell.")
-Dave Grohl (Check Queens of the Stone Age's "Song for the Dead")
-Joe Daniels (Local H - Check "High-Fiving MF," "What Can I Tell You?"
-Brian St. Claire (Local H after Joe left - "Rock & Roll Professionals")

Both Joe Daniels and Brian St. Claire are, essentially, Dave Grohl knock-offs. I love 'em. From my list, you can gather that I love noisy drummers who abuse their toms and flam whenever they get the chance.

I can't remember his name off the top of my head but I really like the drummer from Chavez. The album "Gone Glimmering" not only has solid drumming but the way the drums are recorded is phenomenal sounding.

BUDDY RICH, Graham Lear, Graham Broad to name but a few "masters" of the drum kit.

Worst drummer ever IMO: RINGO STARR

Zaniest drummer: Keith Moon

Stoned Drummer: Ginger Baker

Weird looking drummer: Those two twits from the "Glitter band"
biggrin.gif
and that "wombles" drummer.

Drummer obscured by lead guitarist Womble.

1. Beauford -- Dave Matthews Band
2. Portnoy -- Dream Theatre
3. Mangini -- Steve Vai's band
4. Copeland -- The Police
5. Kretz -- Stone Temple Pilots

Eric Kretz really impresses me at times, and...
Carter Beauford gels with the band so well...

That's is just an opinion from a guitarist's point of view.
I have played for nine years (I am seventeen now), and...
I always come back to Carter Beauford as my favorite.

EDIT: Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) is good, but not with the best.

All of the above is IMHO.
