They're actually for a friend, and his main use will be gaming, music, and the occasional movie. I recommended the A700s, but he's curious if the D700s would suit his needs better, and I don't know much about them myself. Has anyone had experience with either of these headphones?

He'll be pairing one of these headphones with the Zalman clip on mic.

What are your suggestions/ideas?

They don't sound similar at all. A700 has recessed mids athought they will have more bass impact.  The SRH440 would be a better choice for the same price if he wants closed.

I haven't hear both but I own the AD700 and the soundstage and airiness would fit his gaming and music needs quite well. From what I hear the A700 doesn't preform as well with Gaming since the soundstage is significantly less than the AD700. I think most people find that the ad700's are the better of the two, especially for gaming.

Go with the AD700s, they're better all-rounders.

AD700 are the best headphones for gaming I have tried thus far. Leagues ahead of DT880 IMO.
