Like the title says, what would be the poor man's Ultrasone Pro 900's?  Is it HFI-580's, DT770s, DJ1 Pro, FA-011?!?  What would you guys recommend for someone who loved the sound of the Pro's but just can't get to that $300 price point?

Heya,

XB500's are the poor man PRO900's. And they're very, very close. Yet so far apart in price. If budget is a concern, do XB500, and equalize the mids/highs up a few dB and you have a monster headphone for just $50.

If you can't be bothered with Equalizing, get the HFI 580.

Add a Digidzoid ZO (rev1 or rev2) to either and you'll still be under budget and having monstrous bass (yet good mids/highs too).

Very best,

I haven't heard the PRO900 before but my DJ1 PRO (PRO550) does not feel like a bass monster everyone says the PRO900 is, but if you have heard both and still think so then I guess I'm just crazy for bass impact

I don't really think the PRO900 is mad bass. It's pretty much the same as the Denon D7000 when I owned them which is a relatively slight emphasis on bass. You can EQ the PRO 550 to be very impactful. The best way I got it was from a Cowon J3/S9.

How else do you think I've been living my life for the last few weeks

The PRO550 is definitely only slightly emphasised on the bass. Love the build quality and soundstage of these cans but I guess I might have get something extremely bassy when my wallet recovers from buying portable stuff.

Thanks for all the replies, picked up a pair of DJ1 Pro, missed the Ultrasone sound and these are more what I was looking for...more balanced 580's with a wider soundstage.  Thanks for the input.

Fantastic headphones. Not a poor man's PRO 900 in that they are not absolute bass monsters, but they are great and you will love them.
