What is the best recorded cd(SQ) you've heard?

Jackson Browne- The Naked Ride Home sounds great, if not the best thing I've EVER heard. Not sure what that would be.

I also agree with the earlier mentions of:
Metallica- Black Album
Early Rickie Lee Jones stuff.

Andreas Vollenweider - Down To The Moon -Awesome detail and spaciousness

As a side note, when I was buying a lot of my albums in the 80s, just about anything mastered by Bernie Grundman Mastering sounded exceptionaly good

I've always thought the following bands put out particularly well mastered albums:

The Shins
The Decemberists
Belle & Sebastian
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (well, just not "Take Them On")
Blind Melon
Pinback

Hard to say what is the best but my vote might go to Massive Attack - Mezzanine or Martin Gore - Counterfeit2. But the Harmonia Mundi Mozart Requiem is probably the best I've heard in absolute terms.

I downloaded a random Massive Attack album earlier this month. First off, its some pretty badass music. Second, the sound was awesome, especially the bass. I was amazed.

Sorry dude, I hate to criticise other people posts, but just to warn people off this album:
It really is the worst recorded CD of the year: I had to erase it from my digital player because it would hurt my ears, and I do like the Lips

Best? You mean worst, right?

as good as the Lips may be, their albums aren't particularly well-produced. they're pretty hard and hot.

I am chastened.

Everything I have by Mapleshade Records. I am getting a stack more in a few days and I will report back. Out of what I have now I would say:
Tao Raspuli - "Flamenco" and Alacarte Percussion & Brass - "Boogyen' Swamprock Salsa and 'Trane" are the standouts

I also find the Beck Sea Change DVD-A to be especially good sounding.

A-lot of good stuff. The mentioned Donald Fagen and Dire Straits would be some of my top choices. But there is one big one I didn't see mentioned...

"Thriller" - MJ and Quincy Jones at the peak of their powers.
