"Better Sound Through Research." With a name like Bose, you know it's a brand you can trust.

I just got a pair of used ATH-A900's for just under $200.00 shipped and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more comfortable, fun, easy to use (no amp needed) set of cans. Of course the sound is different from the Grados, but I imagine if you're looking at the Bose you want a closed phone anyway. I've tried the SR-60 and SR-80 and wish I owned a pair for rocking out sometimes. I do own SR-125's and sourced form PC or iPod touch 1G in comparison for rock, jam, rap, any trance/dance, and video games the audio technica's are amazing.

however if you're looking to amp there are other things I'm told-

it's just there are better things than Bose for the same cost.

Sorry, but that really was a stupid comment.

You're probably right, but it's just that I strongly dislike everything that Bose is and has done. They stopped being a reputable company decades ago, and ever since then have conducted their company in a way that has made their name synonymous with deception in my mind, and I won't buy their products on principle.

Sorry if my comment was stupid and if reading it wasted your time/energy.

Exactly. I heard they've been sold off to China. Still good sound, but many QC3's have physical defects

So are we going to make jokes or list real phones > Bose?

Denon D1001 and D2000 but I'd rather this thread take the other road and we have more answers like Wet Diapers. Got a good laugh from that one.

Denons are famed, so no wonder. Wet diapers wasn't the that funny.

KSC75 sound ten times better for a tenth of the price.

Wet diapers, although a sarcastic remark, probably have better sonic qualities. Someone should make a mod!

And AD700's sound 10,000 times better for around the same price.

IMO, the Triports I used to have weren't bad headphones - but there are much better ones out there that cost a lot less. Not to mention, the Triports will snap to pieces if you look at them funny.

I recently did a shootout between my SR60s, MDR-NC60s, my dad's Triports (since I looked at mine funny a few years back and they snapped to pieces), and my ancient Koss Pro-4AAAs.

My very subjective feelings:
  1. Triports - bloated bass, and where the f___'s the midrange?
  2. MDR-NC60, noise cancelling on: Needs more bass - I can EQ it in.
  3. MDR-NC60, noise cancelling off: Good, but still seems a bit thin.
  4. SR60: My favorite of the bunch, as long as I don't need isolation. Strong-but-realistic bass, that beautiful fat midrange, and crystal-clear highs.
  5. Pro-4AAA: Not quite as strong bass, but still seems surprisingly Grado-ish. Good isolation, but they're like wearing vise grips.

Only the Grado and the Pro-4AAA could handle a large choir with lots of sopranos in the stratosphere. As for the Triports, I was afraid the headband would break when I was putting them on or taking them off.
