What is AKG's best closed-back design?

That would be the either the K 271 or the K 272HD.  They are bascially one and the same except for few cosmetic differences.

I'm not sure of the context of the question or what type of sound you are looking for - but the k271mkIIs are fabulous to me. I just sold my k701s - and they were amazing phones - but I can to this day not say I liked them better than the k271s. I deep down believe I favored the k271s...the lows were way better - and the AKG sound was there.

I also own the k271 mkII phones and honestly love the sound. I'm also just getting ready to pull the trigger on some grado rs2i for the open sound

Personally, I much prefer the K 240 MK II to the K 271 MK II. I found the former has more realistic bass and a more full sound. But to each his own -- many love the K 271 and it is a very nice headphone.

So the K271/272 are superior to say the 240/241?

What is the difference between K271 MkI and MKII?

The K340 is without contest the best closed headphone AKG ever made or will ever make.  Then probably the K270 playback (2 drivers per channel), then the K271.  Then the dribble like the K81dj

The K240 is semi-open...

I don't think I can get my hands on the K340, nor the K270 Playback. But looking into the 27x series. What's the best bet there - the K271 MKII? Or the K270 Studio (two drivers like the Playback)? Other?

I value resolution and neutrality above anything. Going for a closed design this time to compliment my HD650.

Any input much appreciated!

Yes, I like the K-271MKll, but I'm prefer the K 240MK II to the K 271MKII as well. The upper mids stand out with the support of the bass, like on the K-701/2 models.

This.

Actually, for some reason I thought the K340 was semi open.

I seriously hope the 271 isn't AKG's best closed can, considering the 340 is closed as well.

I haven't heard the 340, but the 271 is something I regret buying. I kinda broke mine, cosmetically, so I've never bothered to try and sell them, but I never use them either. They sound... strange. Somewhat detailed, but kinda intangible in some way. Sorry, I can't explain it properly, I'm not quite sure what it is that makes them sound this way, but for me the sound is something I can very well live without. Do try them before buying.

On the +, they isolate quite well.

What's your source and were you using an amp?  The K 271 are bit more difficult to drive, so perhaps yours were underpowered?
