What beats Sony MDR-1R?

Yeah, im in the minority here, but I feel the momentum is more comfortable. The 1r's pads are too thin. The momentum is more balanced IMO, and its technically superior.
The 1r has a better price to sq ratio though.

lol what beats is ... hmm everything [Just kidding guys]
 
no seriously though, if your talking about in the price range, the K550 and Ath a900x beat it, if your including price range and open back, add Beyers to that list, and this beats it  <- you might be able to swing that at $350 as well. As I paid $350 for mine 
 
So there a few options that can best it

I agree, the mdr's are a better value. If the momentum's were $100 less they would be a much better value.
