Breakfast in America [Deluxe Edition]

Supertramp

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical...Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep,,,

I really dig that song, thanks for "making" me fire up my rig this morning, during my literal Breakfast in America!

(not really my breakfast)

edit: a few more with great lyrics:

Rudy
Songwriters: HODGSON, ROGER / DAVIES, RICHARD

Rudy's on a train to nowhere, halfway down the line
He don't wanna get there, but he needs time
He ain't sophisticated, nor well-educated
After all the hours he wasted, still he needs time.
He needs time - he needs time for livin',
He needs time - for someone just to see him.
He ain't had no lovin'
For no reason or rhyme
And the whole world's above him.
Well it's not as though he's fat-
No there's more to it than that-
See he tried to play it cool-
Wouldn't be nobodys fool.

Rudy thought that all good things comes to those that wait
But recently he could see that it may come too late.

All through your life, all through the years
Nobody loved, nobody cared.
So dim the light, dark are your fears
Try as I might, I can't hold back the tears
How can you live without love, it's not fair?
Someone said give but I just didn't care. I didn't dare, I didn't dare What good advice are you waiting to hear?
Hearing's alright for them that's all there
You'd better gain control now
You'd better show'em all now
You'd better make or break now
You'd better give and take now
You'll have to push and shove now
You'll have to find some love now
You'd better gain control now.
Now he's just come out the movie.
Numb of all the pain,
Sad but in a while he'll soon be
Back on his train...

School
Songwriters: HODGSON, ROGER / DAVIES, RICHARD

I can see you in the morning when you go to school
Don't forget your books, you know you've got to learn the golden rule,
Teacher tells you stop your play and get on with your work
And be like Johnnie - too-good, well don't you know he never shirks
- he's coming along!

After School is over you're playing in the park
Don't be out too late, don't let it get too dark
They tell you not to hang around and learn what life's about
And grow up just like them - won't you let it work it out
- and you're full of doubt

Don't do this and don't do that
What are they trying to do?- Make a good boy of you
Do they know where it's at?
Don't criticize, they're old and wise
Do as they tell you to
Don't want the devil to
Come out and put your eyes

Maybe I'm mistaken expecting you to fight
Or maybe I'm just crazy, I don't know wrong from right
But while I am still living, I've just got this to say
It's always up to you if you want to be that
Want to see that
Want to see that way
- you're coming along!

Sister Moonshine
Songwriters: HODGSON, ROGER / DAVIES, RICHARD

Ooo-when I was a small boy,
Well, I could see the magic in a day,
But, now I'm just a poor boy,
Well, maybe it's the price you have to pay,
If you lock your dreams away
If no-one wants to listen.

What's the story,
I wish I'd been a minstrel,
Just think of all the maidens I could call,
Oh-I wish I'd been a gypsy,
Then maybe I could read the crystal ball,
'Cause surrounded by these walls,
Just makes me feel uneasy.

I said hey, Sister Moonshine
Won't you send me a little sun
I said hey, Sister moonshine
Who's a stranger to everyone.

So, -MAKE US ALL LAUGH-
Make us all cry
-MAKE US ALL GIVE-
Make us all try
Give us a secret, show us the light,
Well, strike up the music, light up the sky.

Mmm-If I was a lion,
Well, I could be the king off all the plains,
Mmm-If is was an eagle,
Well, maybe I could fly above the rains,
Oh, fly above the pain
But, I know I'm only foolin'

I said hey, Sister Moonshine,
Won't you send me a little sun,
I said hey, Sister Moonshine,
Who's a stranger to everyone.

Hey now, Brunch in America , so be it !

Nothing quite like the sustinence and nourishment of a good
side order of music and it's poetry added to ones daily diet !

Glad to have been a postive influance in your tunning into your tunes with my post !

I am also greatful for your many good selections posted in our WAYLTN thread here ,
as I am not well and find some relief with good and personally meaningful music !

Super Alto Sax really made this stand out to me in '79 and the lyrics , of course , being
personally meaningful then as well as now; The definition of being a "Classic"  ;')

Peace ~

The Incredible String Band:  Painting Box from The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion (1967).

According to Joe Boyd's fascinating book "White Bicycles", their moment in time came at Woodstock in the rain.  They refused to play in their primo opening night slot because of the weather, missed their chance and ended up a footnote to the era.  But to me they represent the late Sixties at its purest.
