The 2nd half of the album is with the Umbria Jazz Orchestra of Italy. They
seem better-suited to accompanying Bill on this kind of music.


The Circle album was a bit too avant garde for my taste, so decided to spin-
up this new album ... dueling double basses of the highest calibre.

I think these guys are having a ton of fun.

I haven't listened yet. It's in the rota for this afternoon. Will post my comments then ...

Edit: Well, it's not easy music to critique, that's for sure. It's very complex and the presence of the orchestras opens up many options for Bill and his arranger Michael Gibbs (who is an interesting dude). Requires careful and critical listening ... not a head banger by no means. Some pieces are beautiful and at other times I just wished they would get on with it. The smaller orchestra, Umbria Jazz Orchestra from Italy, is better suited to this kind of gig. The Brussels Philharmonic is great, but IMO they're a big too large and polished for this music. I will listen again, because I like enough of it to not just give up after one session. Oh, and too, the drummer Rudy Royston, is tremendous and I had no knowledge of him until now. He's also a band leader and worth exploring further. Hope this helps!

^ Going hard on the Jarrett discography run, because I find it easier to listen to a lot of an artist/group at once rather than over a longer period of time (I get burned out and it starts to take months to get through what should have taken a week or two; like what happened when I went through all of my Freddie Hubbard collection!). I'm using the chronological order listed on discogs btw, since liner notes and copyrights on the printed material are often unhelpful when many albums came out in the same year. I am saving the (many) live albums for later

Once in a while I focus on a specific year in the entire collection (all meticulously tagged), or by genre, or a phase of an artist chronologically but then again sooner or later it's back to shuffle mode, track or album wise: genre, artist, year, or global ... whatever ... always good for a surprise. Dang, I'd need years to listen my way through the entire collection and I'm still buying more stuff almost daily (just bagged a 50 CD collection today on eBay, looking forward to an extended ripping session
