@Elegiac, I went through my New-Aged Kitaro phase, late '70's into the '80's practicing yoga & meditation while academically pursuing comparative Eastern v Western religious studies.
Kitaro was the soundtrack during my personal journey and practice of inner enlightenment.
Thanx for the reminder to rediscover myself

Uhm, I discovered Kitaro when I watched the Silk Road documentary series. He does the soundtrack for the whole thing.

There are numerous excellent L'Orfeo's out there. But few that have a fluency in phrasing and dynamics. With that I mean that everything is tied together and giving a drive and dramatic impact. Even excellent recordings by Jordi Savall and Rene Jacobs are somewhat 'fragmented' and static at times.
My favorite recording is that by Gabriel Garrido. The way he phrases, ties everything together and builds subtle climaxes is wonderful. His Possente Spirto (beautifully sung by Victor Torres) is unmatched. What Garrido, Savall and Jacobs share is a warmer, more emotional and (a maybe 'Mediterranean'?) approach compared to the colder and clean recordings of British ensembles.
Leonardo García Alarcón's recording has a similar character as Garrido's. He takes more liberties in tempi and instrumentation than Garrido does and it sounds completely like new material at times. Everything flows and sings in a forward fashion.
