The band was formed in 2004 by Michael League ... the 10 musicians were
jazz students at University of North Texas. These albums are their first, from
2006, 2007 and 2008, so I suppose they were "concept" albums ... already
the band was quite snarky in nature. Their music is so experimental, perhaps
all their albums could be called "concept." Superior musicianship is displayed.

Each year beginning on December 1st, I name and write short reviews of my top 15 albums of the outgoing year. So tonight I'm enjoying CAPRISONGS.

Here's a short review:

FKA twigs’ prior album MAGDALENE tightrope walked the border between the sacred and profane, but on CAPRISONGS she finds herself comfortably in the fast lane—her heavenly voice—distorted a million different ways but always instantly recognizable—pirouetting through a series of heavily percussive soundscapes. She lowers the stakes somewhat by labeling CAPRISONGS a “mixtape” rather than an “album.” A disciple of Björk, FKA twigs similarly makes her acrobatic vocal performances seem effortless. But rest assured, FKA twigs puts in serious work across this frisky, sonically rich song cycle. Favorite tracks: “honda,” “tears in the club,” and “minds of men.”
