The Great Lost Performance is an hour-long affair, recorded in Ashbury Park, N.J in 1990. Cash and the Carter family give it their usual gusto through classic hits like 'Ring of Fire', and 'Folsom Prison Blues', alongside many other tracks with contrasting levels of notoriety. Great, yes. Lost - not any more.
The 'Lost' performance in question comes from 1990 - at a time when, in many ways, Cash himself was lost. It's commonly recognised that Cash's career comprises two very obvious peaks - being his early days at Sun Records/Columbia, then the latter years collaborating with Rick Rubin on the American Recordings.
So this performance comes from the rather less celebrated middle period of his career, yet it still finds Cash in fine voice and good humour. Despite the wilderness period, his live work rarely diminished, and as a mixture of old, and, at the time, new, it's a fine snapshot of the man doing what he loved, and clearly enjoying himself while he's at it.
