I got lucky and found a pair of Genelec 8020As for a cheap price despite their age -- this year they turn 11 years old and I've owned them for about five now.
They're perfect size, in my mind, to be paired with a desktop computer. Initially I was lukewarm about my pair being silver in color, but nowadays I think they bring nice contrast to my otherwise black desktop. They also match the color of my Denon DA-300USB, although nowadays it's hidden underneath a separate headphone amp.
I have Logitech Z120s which are VERY CHEAP hahaha but honestly, they get the job done. For basic usb powered speakers, they're pretty good plus they've lasted years with me It was also a gift so I didn't even pay for it lol. Will definitely want some high-end gear when I'm not a student anymore but for now, I'm pretty happy.
Bose Companion 2 (first gen). Have been in storage for ages, betore that I used to use them straight out of the headphone output of the pc. Am going to try them from the Preamp outputs of my Schiit Valhalla 2 this weekend.
So I tried to hook up my Bose's to the Preamp outputs of the Valhalla. It sounds good but the Preamp is definitely overkill for these speakers, though the DAC (Modi 2 USB) definitely improves the sound.
Looking back the Bose speakers are definitely overpriced (even though they were on discount when I bought them). Better than the cheap pc speakers, but for not much more you can get active speakers from the like of KRK (bookshelf size).
I have an Emotiva A-100 powering a pair of Ekac UB5. The DAC is crucial in this case, I’ve been thinking about using the passthru into a preamp and sub at some point in the distant future.
I have had 5.1 and 2.1 desktopsets but nothing beats my second hand Magnat Monitor B from 1981 (picked them up for €20,--) and a very old amplifier for €10,-- of which the radio does not work anymore.
Ascend Acoustics CBM-170SE. Very satisfied with them, though next year I plan to be using only floorstanding speakers save for the center channel of course!
