Out of curiousity, I have a Schiit Jot running XLR pre out to a JBL LSR310S then to JBL 305P MKII - should I run low gain when in this config with the active monitors?

Yes you should be running low gain. Low gain will take whatever you are giving the Jot (2volts RMS from the internal dac/4volts RMS usually from a external dac) and double that for the maximum voltage on the pre. If you apply a higher gain setting it'll give you less room on the volume knob and possibly more noise due to gain. If you ever find yourself turning the knob all the way then maybe the next gain setting would be of use, otherwise just stick with low. (2v x2 from internal (4V) would be the usual maximum on an XLR pre and I have no reason to believe the JBLs would ever need more).

Emotiva AirMotiv4 near field monitors. Reccomended by CNet's Steve Gutenburg (https://www.cnet.com/news/emotivas-astonishing-desktop-speaker/), and they aren't bad at all. Though I think he has since found ones he likes more.

Have had the same speakers for about 3 years and they totally rock. Haven't had the urge to upgrade yet, though I know there are better speakers out there. Yeah, I bought them off of Steve's recommendation.Emotiva AirMotiv4 near field monitors. I have Aperion Allaire and it has been good. I don't need a big bass speaker, but it should be clear sound

A pair of JBL LSR305's for my PC video and gaming and a pair of JBL LSR308's gathering dust (if anyone is interested)...since they turned out to be too big for the room I was using.
Cheers!

My JBL LSR 305 also does a great job of gathering dust.
Worth the money.

I'm running a SB Zxr out to a Kenwood KA-7300 then to KEF Q350s. Love the dual mono of the 7300 and the KEFs are just ridiculously good for the $. (Present from dad for birthday last year)
