Do I have to be an owner ATM or is it ok if I have owned them before?

Well I can tell you that I used W5000 with RudiStor RP5.1 with NOS Mullard 6DJ8 tubes (this was the best combination for W5000) and my source was Storm Digital D02 back then.

Hmm, I don't know. You are a former W5000 owner and currently use the HD650. Sounds a bit iffy to me.

How about we let Team W5000 decide?

Two out of three, the next three posts (other than Patu's) in this thread indicating yes or no.

If less than three relevant posts/votes appear, I'll assume we decided to ignore Patu.

Haha. I don't really care if you count me on your list or not. I just wanted to let you know that my combo worked very well with W5000.

Speaker bug bit me when I owned W5000 so I went for Genelecs and downgraded to HD650 + Aria combo. Then after a while I decided that headphones are my thing and decided to build my rig around HD650.

IMO W5000 definitely is a great headphone. I can't say that it's better than HD650 but it's totally different for sure. I like them both very much.

yup, Patu is good

SK138 and M^3 owners:
I believe SK138 once posted the M^3 offered 80% or 90% of the HA5000 sound for less money. How much is a maxxed M^3? I know even "maxxed" can be relatively meaningless with the myriad of configurations available, but I'm just trying to see if there is a significant cost difference with the HA5000.

I got mine at incredible bargain...at cost to build price
eggosmile.gif
I got the last of Rockhopper Audio's maxed M^3. It has following upgrades:

• STEPS Power Supply
• All Blackgates FK series caps
• 4 sets of Inputs
• Gain Switch (for High and Low impedance headphones)
• 627 Opamps on L&R and 637 opamp on ground (upgraded later)
• Alps Blue Velvet Pot
• No bass boost...since it can distort sound quality

There are few DIYer here in this forum that you can commission to build you M^3 with many options. Also...you can tweak the sound by changing opamps...something you can not do with HA5000. All considered...I prefer M^3.

Interesting to see the wide variety of amps used with the W5000.
Don't you think the Corda's deserve something of a third place?
I find it interesting that two people find the Corda to match the W5000. I never heard the W5000, but from what I read I think I would not consider it a likely match....(I do own a Prehead). Bit lean?

I tried W5000 with EAR Purist HD150 and Heed CanAmp (more power) but they sound really bass light. I can get some bass extension by pressing them hard against my ears, but that wont let me any more hands left to do some other things
frown.gif

I am coming from HD650 and RS1 and at this point I am "slightly" dissapointed.
Even K1000 from Heed has more bass to it

I tried inserting some pads, but it did not help, I am currently trying to burn them in (even I remember reports it did not do much difference)

I also use the H650 and RS-1, and I don't think the W5000 is bass-light. It has equal or better bass details, texture and extension. Bass quantity and impact is not lacking.

Hope you can try other amps and reach a level of satisfaction with the W5000.
