I just listened to a few epic metal tracks with the VSD1's for another head-fier, and I came away very impressed with them. Very different sound to the Basso's, but as enjoyable. People could do a lot worse than having either one (or both).

Was it gunnerwholelife?

Twas indeed.

I guess he doesn't trust my opinion alone and wanted second opinion. Honestly for something like Opeth the vsd1 is actually really good - to a point that I liked it a lot more than the s500 in that regard, which says a lot given my signature LOL

Lol! Yeah, I had never heard of Opeth before. But I got quite into this track that he provided:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu7UvZTPT4M

And I was very pleasantly surprised by how well the VSD1's handled it. These are some notes I made:

bassos
- harder to drive (more volume required)
- instruments seem farther away
- deeper soundstage, more airy
- not as forwards as with the vsd1's

vsd1
- instruments seem closer, more in your face, headbanging sound
- wider soundstage
- easier to drive
- more bass, more mid bass, but pretty well controlled
- bass not as tight as with bassos, but I like it as much
- more forward mids
- treble nicely controlled (it not super extended). Not fatiguing at all.
- really nice timbre and crunch to the guitars
- overall sounds great to my ears

Wider soundstage would been better for me. lol
Then airy sounds good for trance!

Actually, I take that back. They both have about the same soundstage width. But the bassos' soundstage is deeper for sure.

Nah, it's too late - you can't take it back.

Hahaha, ah the wicked levels of uncertainty are beginning to shine through.

Yeah, he should have a drink (or more) like me. That always improves not only sq but the perception of sound

Lol! I'll be sure to follow those words of wisdom a bit later!

Fwiw, I initially got tricked into thinking that the vsd1's soundstage is wider because their sound is so much closer and in your face (ie more forward across the spectrum), that you really notice the width. But when I checked again against the Bassos, because their soundstage is deeper, you kind of get tricked into not realizing just how wide they are. But the Bassos are indeed as wide.

Get it? Got it?? Good!!!

I understand you. It's hard to evaluate and compare stuff without the help of alcohol. The basso's have to be pretty V-shaped for you to consider the vsd1 in your face though as I would call it a touch laid back.

Yes, all of this listening and trying to describe sounds is making me very thirsty! I guess the Basso's are a bit more v-shaped than the vsd1's, but the basso mids don't seem recessed at all and they seem pretty balanced. What I mean by "in your face" really is that the vsd1 instruments and vocals seem closer, whereas the basso instruments and vocals seem a bit farther away and spaced amongst their deeper soundstage. I'm sure that I'll come up with better terminology after I get that drink in me!

Well, there shouldn't be a need for new terminology. If instruments and vocals sound closer to you that's because it has more forward mids, which means the basso is more laid back even if it's not severely V-shaped. On the other hand, that makes its soundstage less impressive as that's what you get  the less forward the mids are - a bigger soundstage.

Thanks - spot on. I owe you a drink for putting it properly into words lol. Yeah, the bassos do sound more laid back, the mids are not as forward, and the soundstage depth is bigger. Much more succinct!
