@gimmeheadroom Yes, that's what's bewildering. I haven't tested balanced out yet, but I also expected the V280's SE to have more power than the v200. Or at least the same. I didn't expect less. Although I realize that volume at 12 o'clock doesn't necessarily = power, I can't exactly test at 3 o'clock...

Yes, I agree it is not obvious why this is happening. There could be a small loss converting the SE signal to balanced. I understand that one feature of the V280 (and probably the V281) is that all inputs are converted internally to balanced.
Question: What would be the explanation for a V200 being louder via the 6.3mm output than a V280? I have both here now and I thought I detected a difference. I had expected at the same volume setting (12 o'clock for ease) to hear the V280 play louder (I used the HD-600). Instead...
Subjectively:
V200 - very loud, uncomfortably almost
V280 - loud
Objectively (using my Meterk Sound Level Monitor):
V200 - same 10 sec part in a song, between 76 and 82 db
V280 - between 72 and 78 db
I tested both SE outputs on the V280. The pre-gain settings are exactly the same, all lower, all default.
thank you very much for your answer, my budget is more or less around 2000€, with the v281 for now I play the denon 7200 and the hd800, both balanced and both sound really good, in fact I was oriented towards an audeze lcd3 or even lcd4 to find it used. I'm afraid of the hifiman he1000 because their impedance is a bit too low.
Thank you very much for your reply, the idea of the lcd4 is coming forward if I find it used, is the combination tending towards neutral tonally? for me, for example, with the v281 the hd800s are still a bit bright while the denon 7200s are a bit dark.

I wouldn’t be concerned with the output impedance of the he1000. However if you say you find the hd800 a little too bright then you may find the same with the he1000v2 or the he1000se. Maybe worth a demo as they are VERY well priced at the moment and hifiman does allow returns if bought direct from them. I have not heard the he1000 stealth.
hello and thanks for the reply, if you want to use a single headphone it would be ideal, but I would like to keep a single amp to drive more headphones and the v281 seems ideal to me since the hd800s are also great especially for some genres, for the electronics we are almost there but I would like a little more bass.

The HPA V281 is excellent with headphones ranging from the Audeze LCD-X (20 ohms, planar) to the Beyerdynamic DT-880 (600 ohms, dynamic). Right now (a critical concept!), my favourite headphones to pair with HPA V281 are: Focal Clear OG, Grado RS-1x, Sennheiser HD660-S2, ZMF Atrium (LTD Cocobolo).

I never heard the LCD-4 (wish I had), but owned a lovely-sounding pre-fazor LCD-3. That headphone was a real unicorn, one of a kind. It was maybe the best headphone for classical music I've ever heard. The tone, timbre, and soundstaging on classical were first-rate. It didn't do so well dynamically with modern, bass-heavy music, but if you're a classical fan, that's the one to get (and my LCD-3 just loved the V281).
I've heard various examples of the HE100/SE, but didn't care for the tonal balance. Low impedance is no big deal on its own, but that can have the side-effect of keeping your volume pot turned far counter-clockwise, near the bottom of its range (that can be a pain in the ass).
I hope this isn't too tacky, or against the rules - I just listed my V281 for sale. It's here: https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds/violectric-v281.49351/
My unit is "the OG", being the demo unit John Grandberg reviewed on innerfideltiy way back when.
