Hey Val, I was thinking about getting a set of 3D shields but I'm not sure whether the designs I'm considering will come out well in 3D. Is there any way to find out whether a pattern will work, and will come across as intended before placing an order?

I was wondering this too. When I ordered my xs with fiber shields, I asked in the comments/remarks section if it's possible to add some of the V-MODA "sculpture" design in the background of my submitted design. I also asked if it's possible to preview the shields prior to shipping. I never heard back from anyone and just received my headphones with shields that had just my submitted design.
 
They look great, and I have no complaints on how they turned out. However, it was unfortunate to not get any word regarding my requests. I figured the answer to both would be a "no", but it would have been nice to get some sort of response instead of nothing.

I'm really surprised at the first one though. I never expected them to have that much detail, it looks exactly like the photoshop file I gave them.

Has anyone tried ordering a custom 3D printed steel. Would like to know some feedback on quality, design challenges, and overall take on the product.

Looks good. How long did it take for V-Moda to send you the shields after you submitted your design? Just wondering typically how long it takes.

Also how long does it normally take for them to get delivered when ordering the steel shields with the M100s?

My M100 with my printed shields took 6 days from ordering to delivery.

Are you looking to get the laser engrave or 3D shield? If your looking at the laser plates the design would work perfectly. I would buff up the font thickness a bit like chose a heavier font but the ones you have will work. If you're looking at 3D then the font won't turn out well.

Actually, scratch my last comment. You're getting M100's it should be fine.

Mine took a month, and that was because I bothered them. Probably would have taken longer if I didn't say anything. World class service my ass At least they were great with writing back to me. Could also be because I live in Canada.

I remember picking stainless steal. Also worth noting is that the shields actually differ in color. The left shield is complete grey while the right one has a gold hue to it. You can't tell in my pictures but it really doesn't bother me too much. Over all I'm very happy with them. Another thing to consider is that the metal is really heavy and I find does effect the clamp a bit. It still sits really nicely but if you're moving your head around a lot they do feel like they are going to fly off. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Our steel+metals do take a little time, but if you understand the process from design to 3D printing to polishing and more, it is very complex and in fact shorter than a Nike ID shoe.  Check out Steve Guttenberg from CNET's custom Golden Ear we designed in our Milan studio:
