I don't know if you intend to use it with your Mac but it seems to me they haven't released their Mac drivers yet. Their latest drivers added the support for DS and Windows 7.

slim.a you started this thread & it's understandable that you have a sort of protectiveness about it's conclusions. I don't disagree with your conclusions, whatsoever - I don't know as I have not listened to the others units - I was simply giving my opinion/specs (as far as I knew them) on the Musiland.

Just don't accuse me of mis-information - I have tried to answer the questions that you asked, hence the discussion on jitter.

Unlike your stated objective in this thread, I'm interested in why some units sound better than others as I learn more in pursuing the whys than in just chasing the next great thing. But everybody is different in how they get their enjoyment from this hobby.

I wish you all the best & still don't fully understand what your problem is but life's too short to spend time on this.

The mac drivers might come sooner than you expect. I just got an email from Marco saying that the mac driver is compiled already and might be sent for testing in next 3-4 days.

It might change due to its given state (beta), but it's coming along nicely.

It is any combination of (listed from the most common to least common):

• USB transmitter on computer side
  Mainly influenced by HW implementation of your USB ports (do they share bandwidth, are they powered...). To determine/solve problem with this type of problem, try using different USB ports on your computer or connect your DAC through a good full speed self powered USB hub connected to your computer.
• USB driver (and other drivers)
  Latency! If any driver on your computer "hogs" the computer (locks CPU and/or other resources for too long - usually caused by sloppily written drivers) or your computer is not capable to handle real-time data streams properly (slow computer, too many interrupts from other HW and SW sources...) data dropouts will occur. Install drivers that work, disable/uninstall non-needed HW/SW... If all obtainable drivers for your audio HW have latency problems - change audio HW. Do not know for Mac, but on Windows there is a nice tool that can give you a better insight in the latencies of your PC.
• USB receiver on DAC side
  If you have an USB DAC - great chances are that your receiver is 16/48 "off the shelf" implementation. While this plain installation is not problematic per se, the combination with other DAC components can in certain (rare) cases cause dropouts. Nothing much to do here - get a new (possibly better) DAC.

No human being anywhere, ever has been able to reliably (i.e under strict test conditions , not some pointless sighted 1 TEST anecdote) detect jitter at below 1ns and to the absolute best of my knowledge only 1 person has even been able to reliably detect THAT 1ns at all...just a thought

Life has many things to worry about, jitter just is not one of them !

But if you really want to obsess about jitter don't let me stop you

These are bold statements & you seem to be very sure of yourself - I'm not so sure - individual jitter figures are meaningless as has been stated in this thread before - the frequency spread of the jitter may well be more important, who knows?

Thanks FauDrei, great and valuable responce.

My computer is a MacBook Pro Maxed, about 18 months old.
I have 2 USB DACs a Beresford TC7520 and a Buffalo 24.
The problem never occurs on the Beresford, it just happens on the Buffalo24 which was pro built and certenly not cheap. My builder prior to delivery checked it on his Windows computer and reportedly had no problems.

I have tried the three Computer USB Ports and a separate Mains Powered Hub and it still happens.

I think it's NR2 a USB Driver Latency problem and I don't know how to solve it.
I am using an external USB HDD for my music library (I have tried 3 different drives) and a FW800 Time Machine for my Backup.

What next?

Yes, If hiFace works on Mac - that would most probably solve your problem (I suppose your Buffalo have a SPDIF input), and perhaps even improve your setup(s).

Thanks FauDrei, Yes the Buffalo has AES/EBU, Toshlink, SPDIF, and USB inputs and tween XLR(4x3pin) and single RCA outputs.
BTW I ordered the hiFace yesterday from M2Tech, delivery is scheduled in 5 weeks so by then the Mac driver should be released.
