Revenge thanks for the update on your customer service experience. So far that has been my experience as well. Although have not ordered from them yet.

Eagerly awaiting your impression and review of how it sounds. Especially now considering you are not easily impressed.

Thanks again!

I don't think it's that expensive. Considering tomlinson got a quote of $140 more to repair his Mage's to the new 6 driver. I'm guessing at max it's only going to be $750.

My friend asked UM the price and got answer. The new original 6-driver customs are now available to order and 930USD with shipping back.

Talked to Sam minutes ago. It turns out, the Mage 6 isn't the same as their new 6 driver monitor. I can only imagine how they must sound. The Mage 6 are absolutely perfect in every way, to my ears. I love everything about them. They're what I had hoped the original Mages would be. They're bright and detailed, with plenty of bass and impact without being overbaring. It has the perfect amount of everything. I wouldn't change anything about them.

Unfortunately, the right monitor is in need of refitting. The left monitor fits amazingly well. Better than any monitors I've worn yet. I specifically asked them to make the stems thicker than usual for a tighter fit and the left one turned out perfect. I'm used to twisting my monitors in, then twisting them slightly in the opposite direction to "lock" them in place, as it turns out a lot of people do. Well, my left monitor just plugs in and sits. I don't have to readjust, fiddle or anything. However, the right one doesn't do this. This results in unmatched bass response between the two. I can usually push the right one in real tight and get a great sound, but it's only temporary.

But man, the Mage 6 leaves nothing to be desired.

I went down to Jaben's and had some time with the JH13 universals and the TF10 to compare with my TF18. The TF18 is inferior to the JH13, the JH13 is a bit smoother across the entire spectrum and has slightly better and louder bass than the TF18.

Interestingly, the TF10s have deeper and stronger bass than both the JH13 and the TF18. As everyone knows, the midrange is lacking on the TF10s and while I had that pang of regret when I realized the bass on the TF10s was better than the TF18s (it wasn't overwhelming bass, it was punchy and deep on the TF10s), when I put on female vocals and Wilco's YHF, the midrange quality was simply fuller and more complete on the TF18s and the JH13s. (Note: I had the biflanges on the TF10s so the seal was bloody exceptional but borderline uncomfortable lol)

Now, I'm wondering about the bass on the TF18s. I didn't think I had any fit problems, since it's not like there's entirely no bass. Kind of like how mistertomlinson is, if I push the customs tighter to the ear (i press the cable connectors to my head), the bass response is better, I'm not sure if it goes deeper but it certainly is louder and brings the bass in together with the rest of the spectrum. I'm going to spend a month away from the country, so in that time I'll experiment with the way I put in my customs and see if it's just something stupid that I'm doing as I fit my customs in.

I'm also wary of doing a refit, firstly it's another month with my UE700s which is an excellent earphone but after being with the TF10s and now the TF18s it just sucks to go back. Secondly, I'm not sure how to describe what I want, because as far as I can tell, it feels fine and noise is isolated, I get the whole 'my ears are plugged' feeling with the sounds of your body being amplified and all. I guess if I can get a better bass response by pushing the top part of the monitor in closer, the seal could be improved, but as I said I'm not sure how to relay this information to UM and what they can do about it, also I don't want to get new impressions because I'm pretty sure the last ones came out perfect.

Also, sometime in the near future I'll probably pull the trigger on a Arrow amp, I figure the bass boost could help matters but in the meantime I'll just keep working on familiarizing myself with the monitor and seeing if I can adjust it to get a better seal.

Maybe I have just the suggestion for you. I'm sending my right monitor back but I don't think I'll ask for them to remake it. They can make the stem bigger by evenly brushing on the acrylic material and hardening it under the UV light. This will result in a tighter fit if your monitors just seem a little loose and the bass response isn't what it should be. It shouldn't be too detectable since they have the tools to file and buff imperfections. You might consider doing it as well.

One man's meat is another man's poison and each of us are entitled to our own preferences. I don't recall making a similar comment when you insisted that the Mage is a very dark sounding iem during the PMs we've exchanged.

That's exactly what I'm saying, I didn't say it was meant to be that way, the JH13 universal's biflanges probably gave a better seal than the TF18s leading to the improved bass response.

bvan: The reason why you don't remember making such a comment was because I never mentioned such a comment in the first place. And when it comes down to the signatures of IEMs there is little room for debate. If say a ue-11 has bass, it will have bass to everyone, you can't have a ue-11 sounding like a etymotic to some and a pair of darth beyers to another. It does not concern taste and preference, it is simply discerning the innate sound signature of the custom. If he said "I prefer the jh13 to the tf18" i could understand and such a statement is based on taste and preference, but he instead cited that "the jh13 has more bass than the tf18" , THAT, is not taste and preference.

and teren41: I also have a fit issue with the right ear and I still think that there is definitely more bass in the tf18 than the jh13. The tf18 has a tf10 like musical signature while the jh13 is touted to be extremely neutral , if you see maodi's reviews, he says the tf18s aren't very neutral at all , and the bass is very prominent on them. So i do not see how the jh13 could have more bass really. the jh16 yes, but the jh13? I found the tf18s to have a more jh11 signature . So I'm guessing you have a prettyyyy bad fit haha.

You have TF18, JH13, JH16 and JH11? I really wanna read your comparison of those IEMs...

Well I was basing it against his comments that he found the UNIVERSAL unit to have more bass than his TF18s. TBH even I thought the bass on the universal 13s were more than enough. Will you be going to Jaben or stereo anytime soon? Planning to hear the TF18s for myself to reassess my next upgrade path.
