Cartridges are universal, so a new cartridge (including the new needle) can be bought and installed on a vintage TT, no problem. In fact it's very important to at a minimum replace the needle/stylus on any vintage TT as unless you know for sure otherwise it's very likely that the needle is worn.

Oh sweet, I didn't know this thread existed and this is exactly what I was looking for.

I'm interested in getting a < $400 turntable but I don't really know how to start. So far I've only been recommended the Pro-ject series of turntables, and either the Debut Carbon Phono USB or Essential II Phono USB seem like good options. I've seen reviews that the DC is the better choice because of the tone arm.

I heard the Schiit Jotunheim at the launch event and I'm pretty set on getting that for a phono pre-amp unless there are other headphone output options out there for inputs/outputs.

I'm sure the Schiit JOTUNHEIM with its optional MM phono stage would be very nice sounding indeed. That and the Debut Carbon would be very nice. Do you want to connect the TT to your computer for some reason? If not, then you don't need the USB version, since you will be connecting the TT to the phono input on the Schiit.

I was actually hoping to convert the vinyl to 16/44.1 just to add to my digital collection, and take the vinyl master with me on my phone/PMP.

I don't know how good of quality those rips will be. If they're not so great, then having the non-USB version should be just fine. : D

If you have a good sound card, then I wouldn't bother with a USB turntable and I would use an analog input as mentioned in the above post.

But of course, you'll need a good sound card in the first place. If not then you'll have low quality rips playing through your external DAC/amp, almost like having no DAC/amp at all.
A good audio interface will have a set of good quality analog to digital converter, just look for one that has stereo input. Most has mono input designed for mics, keyboards, guitars, etc.

I thought usb turntables are bad. You can still connect non usb to the pc still, using an rca to 3.5 and set it as line in and use audacity to record

only if you put a phono amp in between the phonograph and computer/recording device.

Right, but Miceblue indicated he plans to get the Schiit that has a phono pre, so he would be all set there.

Just trying to make sure others who stumble upon this thread won't think their turntables or recorders are broken :)
