To buy or not to buy Grado RS1 ?

Hmmm....sorry to hear you mod didn't go so well. Maybe talk to Bilavideo...he is the resident Grado mod guru or search his postings. He has some really good info to offer and great ideas. I want to do some stuff to my Grados...I just haven't grown a set big enough yet...lol

As far as the Stax...yeah...I still am interested...I'll just look for info else where.

Arm and Hammer,
Sorry to say you'll find similar flame-fests on dynamic phones, orthodynamic phones, IEMS, amps, dacs, sources, cables, fly fishing, cookery techniques, winter knit wear dos and don'ts, mid 17th century literature, sandwich fillings and everything else somewhere online...

It's not the Stax man, it's the internet!

Yeah...it just seemed the Stax thread was overkill on the flame war. But I agree...you can't really get away from it if you're looking for info on the net.

The mod did go well since now I get a much better sound. Problem is when I put things back together. So the next step will be in modding the enclosure to leave the driver wide open on both sides.
Cilinder-like enclosure, no black mesh, cut earpads, nothing on the back or front whatsoever. Only me and drivers. Fingers crossed.
Ive been in touch with bilavideo all the time, he was the one who adviced me towards modding SR80. He trully is a mod guru.  Hes  awdawd
There are loads of Stax threads on this forum. Which one were you talking about?

OP...if you haven't used Grado Bowls before, don't despair at the pressure on the ears as compared to Comfy pads (as on SR80).  Most people widen the headband by stretching a bit and if you wash the bowls they get tons softer.

I am stubborn, though as I don't want to change the sound in any way so I do occasionally get left ear pressure pain.  The reason the sound can change is that some people (okay one person) said that they "scrunched" their bowls to be closer to Flat pads.   If not for bowls, I don't think I would have realized that my left ear sticks out more than my right.

Oh, and now that you will have bowls you can try them on your modded SR80's.  I use bowls now on my Alessandro MS1's for more detail and a bit more treble.

Good luck with modding your SR80's and I hope you LOVE your HF-2.

Literally, Todd had just sent me the link a little before I let you know about more B-Stock.

He said he had "very few" and who knows the next time they will be offering another Head-F1 special.

The timing of your thread was fortunate!

Edit:  You know I actually have some used, washed soft bowls stashed away...need to try with HF-2 for comfort and to see if the sound changes at all.

Thanks guys.  It has been a busy day.  My 20-year-old daughter had a little girl this morning.  I didn't get a chance to set out for Pinellas Park until the late afternoon.  Fortunately, my supplier stayed late and we had quite a time talking about wood.  I got a couple of nice boards to work with, so I'm stoked.  Tomorrow, I may just get my first crack at building shells in cocobolo.

MajorCockUp, I don't know whether to extend condolences or congratulations.  If you got better sound till you put it all back together, don't put it all back together.  A plastic headphone is a system.  The parts work together.  Change something in that system and you introduce an imbalance.  Yet, you know you don't want to be stuck in harmonious mediocrity.  If an improvement here forces an improvement there, keep the ball rolling and don't let it stop.  I, myself, noticed that improved bass brought out the deficiencies of the plastic Grado.  That's why I found myself having to damp the magnet back and at least damp the back of the plastic button on the rear grill.  But truth be told, that whole button and plastic mesh assembly has to go.  I once cut mine out with a knife (It was the only way to get it all out) - which added needed clarity and removed a lot of plastic-induced spiking.  But a bigger and better improvement was to remove the plastic second-stage rear chamber altogether.  Since the pins in the prongs connect along a pair of holes created by the joint between front and rear chambers, I ended up having to superglue my cushions to my forks.  It wasn't pretty (My plastic front chambers were held on by nothing more than their hooking onto or into the cushions) but the clarity was unprecedented.

In time, you will find fault with the bowls, and not simply because of comfort.  Live long enough and you'll find fault with the jumbos.  Progress is a process of you demanding more - and finding a way to get it.  Good luck!

Congrats again Bill. I had to google for cocobolo.
ArmAndHammer I found that thread. Not much to be learnt there. Maybe we need a new thread just  for friendly newbies. I found out Stax need specialised electrostatic amps. Getting some value out of them  will mean owning more Stax. Not cheaper than RS1 now, is it?
If only there was a club that would let you try other people's stuff....like wife swappers

I adore my HF-2s. I've heard lots of cans during my foray into this hobby, and it's still my favourite! One of the best amps I've heard for Grados is the MAD Ear+ from MapleTree Audio. But if you have some more cash laying around, buy the DNA Sonett instead. I didn't think buying an expensive amp would make a huge difference, but it did. Oh boy, did it ever!

Your HF-2s may indeed go better with the DNA Sonnet, but I wasn't a huge fan with my RS1/RS1i with that amp. Nice, just not spectacular like the MAD amp.

just bought one of the last HF-2's Todd had, they're coming this way now. If some orders don't get cancelled, he's out of them now.

ps. congrats granpa Bill, hope mother and daughter are in good health. So someone's going to get Christmas presents and one day after Christmas, get another present, the coming years. December's going to be a costly month Bill
