Greetings! First and foremost, thank you for being a centralized source for tons of knowledge and impressions! I’ve spent the better part of a month or so of my down time going through this thread and figured, why not jump in and be part of the gang!

So, I’m a long time lurker from the headphone realm. Recently found myself curious about IEM’s for their versatility and convenience, so I’m doing my research as I go. I’ve kinda landed somewhere in the XE6, Raven, RN6 area for what I’d most likely enjoy. First time I’ve seen anything about sound leakage from the recent FiR releases unless I missed it going through all 10 million posts 😅. What exactly is that referring to? My open backs leak a lot and ideally I don’t want that from an IEM.

Thanks!!

If you look at their website, you'll see that they have sort of a tiny open-back speaker built into the side of the IEM facing the ear. Probably why the bass is so good, but inevitably allowing leakage.

Thank you, thank you! It certainly seems that way. How the heck did I miss that post?!

Ahh! I took it quite literally lol. So it’s not like my usual understanding of sound leakage. Got it.

They also have the ATOM vents, so I'm sure that doesn't help, but we're talking tiny speakers vs say an Open-back full-size

Very true. I doubt it’s anything of the sort. Just wanted to double check I wasn’t misunderstanding. But I missed the freakin post so that didn’t help lol.

Vent in the ATOM XS module are so tiny and majority of the leakage will come from the Kinetic Bass opening.

I haven’t made a signature or anything like that yet.. probably should soon for context lol... but I have Empyrean, Empyrean Elite and 1266 TC which are all open back. I have heard some decent closed backs but they never jived enough with me to add one to the collection. I’d much rather get an IEM for that isolated non disturbing sound in even the most quiet environments since even closed backs leak sound at moderate volume. So as long as it wasn’t as loud as that I don’t think it would be an issue for me.

I've owned most of the closed backs out there and I find that IEMs give better sound with more portability than any closed back I've heard.

The open dynamic driver on the FiR XE6 that faces into your ear along with the small pressure relief vent are likely the culprit to the leakage where outside noises get in. I noticed this when I listened to the XE6 while in public places, if you go custom then you may diminish the leakage.

There are many other alternatives that isolate better, as far as what to recommend as an alternative, there are too many variables that we would need to know what you are after, price, stock cable, sound profile, your sensitivity to sibilance, how colored you want the sound or how reference like.

Since I was cable rolling for XE6, I had my friend listen for sound leakage during playback. He wasn't able to hear any sounds and this is on a HiBy RS8, H gain, Turbo Mode, vol 20. Now if I take the XE6 out of my ears, I can hear very level playback coming out which TBH is to be expected. Also my listening volume could be relatively low compared to other Coolers. I'm usually 18-24 on streaming apps and 24-32 on local DSD playback.
