Thanks for
@Rockwell75 and Campfire Audio, I was able to enjoy the entire (almost) current CFA family for a week, an audiophile food coma to me, and I have to spend weeks to recover from the hangover.
For some reason, I was very late to hear any CFA IEM. The first time I remember was in 2023 CJSC I listened to
@Rockwell75's personal supermoon and I have to admit I was not impressed.
Fast forward to 2024 CJSC, I was able to demo many CFA IEMs and it was an instant sold for me. From that demo I was convinced that the very controversial Trifecta is absolute right up my alley and I ended up bought one eventually.
The CFA IEMs included in this tour was:
Trifecta, Clara, Astrolith, Fathom, Moonrover, Solaris SH, Bonneville, Supermoon. All Campfire Audio IEMs share the same DNA or house sound signature, which is big bass and very colorful sound.
Since I already have Trifecta and I also previously spent one week with Bonneville, therefore I spent most of my time on other IEMs this time.
Clara is indeed the most impressive IEM, compared to Trifecta I found the entire sound spectrum was lifted a bit from the warm Trifecta, with more energy on the mid and upper range. As a result, it sounds more dynamic and more neutral than Trifecta. Since I already have Trifecta, I will compare mostly with Astrolith, the second most impressive IEM in the tour for me. Clara is what I may call a W-shaped tuned IEM, maybe not by measurement or traditional sense, but from my personal perception. Even though Clara is a unique IEM in CFA, you can still know it is a CFA IEM once you put them in your ears. The same strong bass as the foundation for the tuning, and in general it has the similar CFA DNA in the tuning. However, compared to most of the other CFA IEMs, especially to Astrolith, it is more energetic and when you listen to music with Clara, it is hard to do laid-back background listening, Clara grapes your attention and demands your attention. However, Clara is still not designed as an analytic, like throwing tons of details in your face type. The Mids is definitely not recessed, you will find vocals are being put upfront, this again unlike Astrolith or any other traditional V-shaped tuned IEMs. The treble is tuned very well, it is not treble-head level but you will not find treble lacking in either details or energy while the entire treble is still tuned unoffensive to anyone who is sensitive to sibilance. When I was A/B testing between Clara and Astrolith, I find another clear difference between them: Clara renders the music with each note being clearly cut and bites while from Astrolith the same music is smoothed and more relax.
Fathom is the most surprising IEM with all BA drivers but sounds just as powerful and impactful as other CFA IEMs. As the cheapest IEM and also the smallest in size, it is a bargain to have.
Moonrover is my lest favorite IEM among the CFA IEMs. Supermoon is better than I thought, but still not as special as others.
Astrolith is simply the best planar IEM I heard, maybe not as technical as Simphonio P0, but better suits my taste. As a dual planar IEM, the bass of the Astrolith reaches very deep, more so than probably other CFA IEMs. The tuning of Astrolith is U shaped and you may find Mid or vocal sit a little backward, especially compared to Clara. The treble is tuned with even more unoffensive compared to Clara so that Astrolith is the CFA IEM that you can listen to the music and totally lost in the music. If you like wearing IEMs and listening to music during work for long hours, Astrolith is one of the best options for you. It is enjoyable but won’t demand your attention like Clara does.
Solaris SH is another typical CFA IEM, that still can stand to other newer CFA IEMs.
In the end, I still found Trifecta my favorite IEM, with enough reason still being the flagship offering from CFA. I was thinking about buying another CFA IEM after Trifecta, but I have to say that after this demo, I found the difference in sound is not justifiable. If I have to pick one, it will be Clara for sure. For people who have never own CFA IEMs before but also do not have chance to do any demo, the safe bet I would suggest would be buy Fathom. It is cheap and fun, and you will have a taste of CFA house sound and it will help you to make a decision to move up to Bonneville, or Astrolith, or Clara. For Trifecta, better have a chance to demo though I personally do not understand all the diss, including a famous reviewer publicly stated that Trifecta sounded literally like balls.
