A quick question regarding current IEM market.

Recently got a Traillii, Bein late to the party, absolutely in love with the thing. Reminds me a lot of telaxed midrange monster ZMF Atrium, but with far better resolution and seperation.

Not feeling like I am missing anything while I listen to Traillii but my loaner Jewel is different enough to consider buying it. While not as lush and intoxicating in the mids as Traillii, It has higher res, even better layering and a lot of air between the notes. Still even with slightly brighter tonality it feels a bit like the same „family“ as Traillii.

I am wondering if you could advice to another complimentary totl IEM.
What I currently have on my radar is the Mentor, Trifecta, and Raven. Maybe Xe6 but from what I read I am not sure the tonality of that one comes together that well.

I usually prefer allroundish sound, my taste is rather eclectic, but I adore stuff that can play metal and rock well, that’s why I am considering a Trifecta.

So yeah happy about any advice. Maybe K just should stick to Jewel, the thing is simply great with so many genres especially with FTs. Perfect for analytical listen too.
You ask about the tonality.

Allaround:
neutral-warmish: Mentor, CP622B, Anni, Ronin
colored: Rn6
neutral-brightish: Raven

Rock & metal:
bassy: Xe6, Trifecta
bassy-neutral: Raven
trebly: Raven, Anni, Fen Wan, Viking Ragnar
energetic: Raven, Anni, Fen Wan, Viking Ragnar

I'm sorry, I may have confused you even more.

Well, if you want an all rounder still introducing some difference, I can recommend trying Fei Wan if you are OK with a bit higher than average treble energy and mids being resolving but pushed back a little.

Yep you summed up my impression of the current market well. Raven really does sound like it could be something I like, somewhat worried about their QC though. How are Ravens technicalities compared to Jewel?

Not sure I can take much more treble than Jewel, that’s why I didn’t consider Fei Wan yet. And the design, well not quite my cup of tea.

For me personally, this is the wrong approach. At this level, the relevant question is no longer how technically different everyone is, but what tonality and tuning they have and you may prefer. Technically, they are all comparable or differences in the weakness are balanced out by strength.

I still think there are significant differences in resolution and layering between Jewel and Traillii. Jewel for what it is, is the closest an IEM got to well driven Susvara to my ear. It’s remarkable that this is possible to have something like that on the move.

I lack the experience though, if that’s a common trait with current totl lineup.

If you really like what Jewel does, consider trying to get a demo of WM1Z2 with it. Excellent pairing and easier on the ears up top than N8ii. (FYI, most of my library is rock).

Well, here too it would be debatable that Traillii also has technical strength over Jewel (e.g. more ready stage). That's what I meant about strengths and weaknesses and compensation in between.

If you’re looking for neutral sounding allrounders you can’t do much better than Traillii and Jewel. I own them myself. If you’re only interested in allrounders you could stop there. The word “complementary” would imply adding IEMs that are specialists in some way and I think that’s not what you want? Other "neutral" IEMs I can think of are the Storm and the Canpur one, although I haven't heard either. Raven maybe? Haven't heard that either. Most of the other IEMs out there would add some flavor one way or another. Mentor is close to neutral sounding but a bit warmer than neutral. Xe6 takes that to the extreme with a huge dose of bass on top. Annihilator is an allrounder for me but the bass quantity is north of neutral. Trifecta is certainly not neutral. It is hit or miss depending on taste and genre. Fei Wan is not neutral either, it's pretty V shaped to me. Personally I think it's fun to add different sound signatures to the collection, but if that's not your thing the Jewel is an excellent choice imho.

Edited: I understand the Raven is far from neutral.

Exactly, that is the detailed answer of what I wanted to say. As always, great, dear Mat.

@Leto Dal you should be (much) more specific so you can get more helpful answers.

Yep in the end this hobby is like good food, you want different flavours all the time. Guess it won’t stop with 2 IEMs haha
Looking fearfully at my ZMF Tree.

I don't know if I can subscribe to that. I like the pizza or asian food I always order and don't feel like trying anything new :).

Well to continue the analogy - I like my pizza too but I couldn’t stick to pizza for more than a couple of days :]

I usually cycle through my headphones, constantly rediscovering their strengths and why I like them so much, bought them in the first place. That’s one of the most fun things in this hobby for me.

If Raven is the new neutral then I'm out! 😦
