Hello fellow Headfi’ers. It’s been a few days since my last update, my apologies!

Oh thank god, I was sitting here refreshing Head Fi waiting for this!

Hello fellow Headfi’ers. It’s been a few days since my last update, my apologies! Every day has been packed to the brim with activities and haven’t found the time or energy until the morning of my 5th day in Japan to chronicle my journeys thus far. Throughout my trip, the conveniences of Japan and USA sharing the same electrical outlet standards are invaluable. Compared to my trip to Switzerland and Italy, it’s great not being limited by the number of adapters I was carrying.

Day 3 (Tokyo, March 13)

Determined to experience the electronics markets in Akihabara, I ventured to Yodibashi Camera. I was surprised to learn, even on a Monday morning, a line quickly formed half an hour before the store opened. Of course, the Japanese knew exactly where to cue, without any guide markers or riot police (LA has jaded me). It seems the British and Japanese are tied with queue orderliness 😊. To describe Yodibashi Camera, I would use the term ‘oppressive vastness’. Electronics as far as the eye can see (that continue for 5 floors), hallways that dare you to venture to the end. As I strolled through the first floor, I admired the Japanese fastidious attention to detail and miraculous ‘packing’ efficiency, every square inch is accounted for. The photo may not convey how bright the store is, the last time I was so visually stimulated (excluding @Damz87 feet pics) was Las Vegas. I needed to take a rest and the end of each floor, I spent approx 3 hours in this store. The time-space continuum seems to bend here, some of us know this as the IKEA effect.

After walking around Akihabara, I was thoroughly exhausted, and headed back to the accommodation to seek refuge in the bar for a leisurely drink. For dinner, I was able to secure a booking at Isana Sushi. Any readers who are going to Tokyo, Isana Sushi (Roppongi) must be highly considered. Only six seats per night, with service from 7PM to 10PM. This omakase consisted of 19 dishes. This is the best omakase experience I had by far, not just from a culinary perspective but the interaction I had with other guests. To the right, was a couple from Quebec, visiting Tokyo for their 7th time. On the other side were locals, one of which was a close friend of the sushi master. Later on, I learned the sushi master was his ‘senpai’ at a different job and this was the first time they’ve seen each other in 5 years. To say it was a joyous reunion would be an understatement! The sushi master speaks English quite well and he represented the epitome of Japanese hospitality perfectly. As the sake continued to pour late into the night, we joked, laughed, and learned about each other’s life experiences. I recall one moment, where the Quebec couple was sharing their love of poutine, proclaiming “Poutine is the best!”, only to discover the locals mistook their pronunciation of poutine as Putin. We then pondered if Putin likes poutine, however we concluded he probably too pre-occupied to give it much thought.

Now that my quota of words that start with p is met, I will end the log for now and update later with Days 4 and 5. I just got the phone call, breakfast is served!

You will love the convenience stores in Japan in that case. You can nearly live off of supplies from your regular convenience store.

I surprised you didn’t check out E-earphone or Fuija Avic.

That’s coming in another update haha, I went to e earphone yesterday. 🤩

Yes, I’ve made a habit of picking up a Vitamin C shot and salmon 🍙 on an almost daily basis. The food stuffs at Lawson/FamilyMart/7-11 are incredible.

HIBY R6 III
Been having fun with my new toy the last two evenings, enjoying this DAP and feel its well worth its price of $500.
Bought this early enough to get the green case free, shipping were faster than normal for once from china.

As mainly a desktop and dongle user I can appreciate the more premium feel of using a dedicated unit.
I also own the small HIBY R3 Pro Sabre 2022 and is one of the reasons I decided on this over some of the other DAPs.

Still very early impressions, but I would say it's neutral with a small touch of warmth. Compared to the R3 this is has better resolution all over, also having some extra fullness in lows and mids. Treble seem very much the same except for more detailed presence region.

One thing for sure, it's highly resolving and takes full use of the HiRes files. Many in here might be looking at DAPs costing more than this, but this punches very good for its price point. Fast UI because of good chipset, Android 12. Class A and AB amplification.

All my testing so far has been with the highly resolving AüR Audio Neon Pro, handmade premium built 10 BA set. Rivalling Anole VX in technicalities for around $700.

Ever since I saw the Hiby R6 III, its features and its price, I hate that I bought the DX170 before its release...

Cross posting from Cayin N7 thread:

80 hours in and enjoying the one of if not the best DSD512 playback I've listened to date and PCM upsampling to DSD512 is f'ing remarkable.

The soundstage is expansive and very dimensional with holographic imaging. Very impressed with the resolution and sound layering. There's a RS8-like natural tonality. Switching to Class A adds more weight to the bass and body to lower mids bringing it closer to RS8 signature which is great for an IEM like UM Mest Mk2 and Indigo and AB more for FiR Audio's Xe6.

Minor quicks has been "loud garbles" has been forwarding to next DSD track during playback. I've experience this across other DAPs and accustomed to it, though not as prominent compared to others. Other quirk has been a tight fitting case, Cayin had the opposite issue with N8ii where it was a bit loose. This time its tight and depending on how you hold the cased N7, the power button seems to get triggered while handling canceling interactions on display.

And in regards to the display, so much nicer than N8ii, the resolution seems higher and the updated wallpaper has a nice modern touch.

Otherwise, very impressed with Cayin's newest DAP and becoming a great companion to HiBy's RS8.

Never got around to posting delivery pics from a couple of weeks ago.

Nice stack. How does N7 complement RS8? What are their relative strengths for you?
No one asked me, but since I currently have both in, I'd say they have very similar sound characteristics. The N7 is obviously lighter since it's not made from literal titanium. It's also very Yellow. I prefer the UI on the N7 to the RS8, but the RS8 is pretty close. I like that I can use the RS8 and a desktop DAC/AMP - and that's what I'm using it for. It meets all my needs, but obviously it costs more, and weighs more, and is larger. What it comes down to for me is that i can use the RS8 for everything I need, including replacing an expensive desktop DAC/AMP. So, sadly I'll be selling the N7 because I don't need it. It's cool to have my top 3 choices all at once though. Under $4K: RS8; Under $2K: N7; Under $1K: M6U.

Glad you love it :), try the RS8 with an extra amp if possible, the line-out mode on RS8 is amazing and easy to access.

Respectfully, you're a new dad, yes? I've been doing this for a year and change now. I love the ever-loving crap out of my little girl, and I would never exchange it for anything--I genuinely mean that--but man, let me tell you, when it is 10:30 at night, she's woken up after 2 hours positively shrieking for mommy (while mommy is actively holding her), keeps asking for milk but refuses to drink it, and seems positively inconsolable...well, let's just say, the thought of hours in the air, uninterrupted, where you can listen to music, crank out some spreadsheets, and have the ultimate excuse as to why you're not responding to emails and texts (no reception in the air)--well, that starts looking pretty. damned. good.
I remember those days very well. And at that time, I appreciated nothing more than a business trip for a few days with great food and lots of sleep!

So you decided to keep M6U instead of N7?

No, the M6U is up for sale too - I'm keeping the RS8 because it does all the things, literally it is acting as a desktop DAC/amp for me right now and it's also portable. Very cool. It also sounds like the N7 and I don't need 3 DAPs. So, yeah.

Good idea, actually. These battery products require babying, otherwise they just die. My father has a whole drawer of old phones, and he has to make a schedule to charge, discharge them every month. It might be better if he just send all to a recycle service.

When are you doing cable review :dt880smile: Imagine the struggle to come up with a rubric for those.

Ha, I did one a long time ago for Lavricables. It was pretty similar to my support product rubric. No one has offered me one to review since and I haven't felt like buying one haha. Musicteck offered me a discount for the Chiron to review, but it was still as much $ as a really good IEM, so I passed.

'd much prefer zoom calls and music at my desk - but hey, that's just me.
I would really hate to work without being with with the team I'm actually working with. Had a pretty great offer managing a project from abroad but didn't do it because of the physical distance which, for me, results in being less engaged.

I used to travel over 100,000 miles per year. It's the primary reason I have flown over 1.4M miles with United.
Okay, stop searching guys! We found him:

Next thing you're going to tell us is that those planes would have left without you anyway!
