The Stax Thread III

I only say that because another user said he spoke with a Stax rep at an event who said that there will be a new product in that price category to replace the 007 and it's coming later this year.
Nice, wonder if it'll be a revision or complete overhaul...

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right thread: could anybody confirm if the STAX SR-007 MK2 or any version of the 007 is still in production? The Stax audio website lists it as "Discontinued".
I was looking for a nice step up from my L300,sigh...
You leave in E.U.?

Headfreaks.dk had the Stax SR-007 Mk2 on sale for DKK 11499 which is about US$ 1667, but that price includes 25% Danish VAT. Without VAT price is around $1333 and include 3 years warranty. Quite cheap for a brand new SR-007Mk2 from a trusted reseller AFAIK.

Hello everyone. I have been wanting a pair of Stax for a long time. Have tested out the SR-L700 MK2 at a few CanJams and love them. When it comes to energizers, I am seeing many Stax variations on eBay. Are there particular energizers to stay away from and avoid?

Could anyone guide me how big the change is when moving from a KGSSHV Mini to a TT amp like the Megatron, Grand Cayman or similar?

I'm driving an X9000 and 007MK1 but wondering how significant the change is and what to expect? The change would require cash but also require me risking wife approval so is it worth it 😆

Grand Cayman has yet to be released and has been in prototype development for 6+ years. Rumor msrp is $20k

T2 is really only available from eksonic and wait times are around 1yr - plus there are sometimes unfixable noise floor issues due to the design. $15k ~

Only two well regarded builders are doing megatrons and the wait period can be long. My first megatron was 6mo but recent experience has been 13mo wait.

For the 99% it’s better to just get a Carbon or BHSE.

Yeah, the difficulty would definitely be an issue! I'm wondering whether it's worth the pursuit and what to expect out of the changes?

Do any of the TT amps significantly enhance/change the X9000s or 007MK1s compared to the KGSSHV Mini? Or is it more a slight tailoring?

The jump to t2/mt is significant to me and my experience but the carbon and bhse are a good click up from the mini.

You might have better luck getting a qualified answer if there's a dedicated L700 thread somewhere. From what I have read (zero experience myself), the L700 isn't too hard to drive. I think have even seen a L700 user saying the Topping EHA5 drives it well. On the other hand, a better amp will sound better, which apparently is more true with e-stat amps than regular types.

Chris at Headphoneer did a comparison with the L700 concluding that there was in fact a sound upgrade going from a SRM-007tII to a KGSSHV Carbon. See attached screenshot.

I'm a relative newbie to Stax also and just recently went down the same path but currently only have the L300, most important to look out for is that a lot of energizers are coming out of Japan so the voltage configuration may an issue if you require something other than 100 volt units and will require an auxiliary transformer. I started with the SRM 252S but the unit quickly runs into distortion if you like to listen a little louder once in awhile, then I looked at the older 313, 323 and the 353 but in the end went with the SRM400s which is the most recent Stax energizer and really brought up the performance of the L300 and should be more than adequate for the L700.

You might have better luck getting a qualified answer if there's a dedicated L700 thread somewhere.
