The sound is similar to the HD600 but it's got more sub-bass and less soundstage.
Quite good overall

First, HD580. Now, HD600? What's next? Is someone going to come out and compare them to the HD650? It'd be the next logical step. XD.

These definitely have warmer mids / bass than the 580 or 600.  On the other hand the treble is also quite energetic.  Like I said a high class V-shaped signature.

Would you consider these a must-buy for the price found? I'm severely tempted even though I dont need open air but it just sounds too good to pass up

Comparable to HD600, now that's gotta be something!

I think I'm going to wait until the FOTM syndrome passes and then come back.

Good luck with that (I'm speaking to myself here lol!)

Some first reports on modding...

Firstly I tried covering the ports shown in boris's photos with sticky tape. This lessened subbass rolloff to the tune of 3-4dB at 20Hz without increasing the somewhat problematic midbass. A definite upgrade in my book.

Then I cast around for replacement earpads and tried the pads from the Philips SHP2000. The cloth pads from these ~$15 phones will fit the Somics nicely (if a bit loosely) and be more comfortable (esp. if the stock pads press on the tips of your ear). They will also totally remove all hints of bass bloat, making for very accurate mids and bass at the cost of reduced subbass and less smooth highs.

Will post pics later.

I don't know how many times I jabbed that submit button on my mobile trying to get it to load... apparently it actually loaded all those times.  The first time the page finished loading there were actually, like, 20 duplicate posts

They're about 18mm deep.

Just got my MH463 today, and I have to say... very impressive for a $45 headphone

The pads are removable, but I'm not sure where you'd get better replacement pads.
You could ofcourse make your own if you've got some sewing skills, a sewing machine and some fabric (like I do

)

Some pics for those curious minds: (bye-bye warranty.....)

there were some comments (focalprice site) about an aluminum headshell yet your photos seem to indicate all plastic?  can you shed any light on this?

& do you still have hd600 to confirm comparison? or is this based upon your recollection of how hd600 sounds?
