With the recent discontinuation of the D5000 / D7000 and the newly introduced models, I'm sure most of you have noticed that the only place to purchase, for example, the D5000's is through Amazon now, and they've gone up in price by almost $200 (550 total).

This has all happened within the timeframe of me deciding that these would be the perfect upgrade from my ATH-M50s, which turns out to be terrible timing. Back in April, I could have purchased the D5000 new for $365, but now I'm not able to find them at that price point even in used condition.

My question is: does anyone expect the price to drop at all, or is this basically only going to get worse in terms of price/availability in buying a new set? I don't really feel the D5000s are worth $550, but maybe they are. Someone who owns these might offer some insight on this.

Is it basically a lost cause to try and hold out for a good deal on these? Should I begin looking at alternatives with similar sound signatures?

Thanks!

Yeah, I agree. No way is something vintage just because it is discontinued. Vintage should be a time period, at least 15-20 years for a pair of headphones.

I don't think $550 is absurd, remember they're $699 list, and the ~$400 pricing has not be a "constant" ($365 is the lowest I've ever heard of them hitting). A lot of people have paid around that $500 bar for them.

Now, as far as whether or not they're worth it - I don't know. I prefer the Kenwood in that fight, and it's cheaper than the D5000, at $399. Check AC.

I think it all has to do with how well the new Denons are received. If they're received really well by the community, I can see the older Denons leveling back out. If they're not well received, they'll probably stay at a higher price.
