The truth is different people hear things differently and only YOU can decide the sound signature that you prefer. And yes they sound great without the mods but the mods are easy to do and allow those so inclined to tweak the sound and make it sound even better to THEIR ears. The S400 is CHEAP (here in the U.S. you can pick them up for less than 25 bucks). Buy a pair and if you don't like the sound signature sell them. If you like them but want even better sound from a larger driver then sell them and get the S500's. I bought my wife a pair of S400's for Xmas and some HM5 earpads and she's absolutely in love with them. FWIW

I just tried S400 stock vs S500 w/AT Pleather.
S500 is definitely an upgrade from S400.
they have the same signature. S500 w/AT Pleather is about 40% over the S400.

Have you tried the HM5 pads, SEEKKY? Big jump in comfort, isolation and sound for both headphones IMO. Just don't look quite as cool.

Can anybody here please upload a video showing how to take the original pads off and put the new ones on?

Really easy to take off. Just start pulling gently on one side and work it off. Even easier to put them (or another) back on. There's a little slit/notch that you put the edge of the pad in and then just rotate it on. I think someone posted some photos WAY back on the S500 thread.

Here's a photo of pulling one off. I think they're somewhat tight so you'll have to pull a bit.

There is a video in the S500 thread that shows you how to very easily and quickly get the pads back on (ie 30 seconds max per pad).

Edit: found it. Props to superstylefacto!
