The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

I have issues on my work laptop picking it up.
I have to plug it in and out a few times sometimes before the laptop picks it up as my output device.

you mean it detects your AK100 as a USB DAC but no sound comes out when you play music?

When you plug in, did it give you the options for charging, USB storage and DAC?

mine has all the 3 options.
when i choose the USB DAC, the laptop recognizes it as a default device under sound hardware.
but no sound comes out when i play any files..

Have you set it as Default device on your computer?

yes, it's default.
Btw, do you need an external speaker for the USB DAC function to work?
or can we use the existing crappy ones inside the laptop itself?

You have to plug external speakers or headphones to the DAC headphone out in order to get sound. The signal from your computer to the DAC is one way.

ohh ok, thanks for the info!
that's a pity, was hoping it'll work with just the stock laptop speakers =(

I think your laptops internal DAC is more than capable of handling your stock speakers tho.

my USB DAC function doesn't seem to be working properly... drivers are installed in the laptop, but no sound comes out =/
anyone had the same problem?

I have the same problem. Actually my player works fine as a DAC with my gf's laptop and with my work PC, but it doesn't work with my laptop (there is no sound). I have no idea why. In all these cases the operating system thinks that the player is speakers, not the USB-DAC.
