The JVC FX850..Woodie perfection?. (A review)

Well, the 650 currently only one third of the FX850's price on Amazon.jp. Tbh, I was surprised it's even comparable to its big brother instead of the jumbled mess I was expecting

I quite enjoyed them while on a walk today and didn't realize the big difference until I compared the two side by side.  Still sounds great and is worth the price going for it right now if anyone is into this type of sound.  I hear no recession in the midrange but is slightly more overshadowed by the bass than the 850's.  Bass is reasonably tight for being big and treble isn't offensive at all.  I'd say it's a notch more polite than the 850's which isn't a plus from what I'm hearing.  They are brand new so I'll give it the proper burn for the next few days and report back.  The 850's did noticeably change for the better around 100 hours.

Never heard the P-51 but have had a couple of Ray's amps and should sound awesome with it, especially if it tightens up the bass which is a plus with RSA amps.

I have owned one of his cables before and will look forward to your impressions when you receive it.

I hope so, my TDK's paired so well with it for some reason. Also thanks for the initial report for the 650, the 850 are out of reach $$$ wise but for the detachable cable alone. I have to think over my budget more. My backup Shures just aren't doing it for me.

I received the 650 today and for those who already own the 850, save yourself the money because the 850's are better in a big way.  650's don't sound any closer to neutral, still has the big bass but loses out on the clarity and definition of the 850's.  650's still sound very good and you will get a good sense of how the 850's sound.

Weird, I would expect more detail at the expense of bass from the smaller driver. Still pretty tempted by these, because... well, because wood... but I rather doubt I'd be moving up in the world with them. Thanks for the impressions!

I figured the FX750 would be an upgraded FX700 but still with tons of farty-bass. Is that the case Danny? Been using the 850s with silver cable interconnect to great effect.

I got the 650's and the bass isn't too obtrusive but it's not even close to neutral. Since the FX700's were a little peaky and had big bass, I would consider the 650's a step in the right direction compared to those. I get no fatigue and midrange is still clearly heard so to me that's a plus compared to the FX700's. James444 has all three and says they're all big on bass.

I also find my 100% silver RAL interconnect pairs up well with the JVCs when I am including my large iCAN amp. That is why I also ordered the 100% silver FBI upgrade cable for them. The RAL seems to lighten up and balance out the sound the best of all of my ICs, so hopefully the new headphone cable will have similar effects.

I think the FX850 isn't nearly as excessive with the bass as on the FX700s but I agree it is still a bass heavy IEM.

Think I might be able to swing up to the 750, as the price on AmazonJP is only a bit more. It seems to be very close to the 850, besides not having the detachable cable.

I'm also assuming any of the three, would not carry a warranty for repair/replacement in the USA?

Can anyone comment on how to swap the cables on these? Is there any trick to it, or do you just pull them straight off? I have never had a cable with this particular Shure type connector before.

These reviewers aren't impressed with FX850 over FX750:

I think they gave the Fx850 a lower score as think that the detachable cable isn't worth the extra premium. Not to mention I remember someone on the deals thread(Nuts?) saying that the FX750 are tuned with more bass in mind. Will have to confirm with james444 but I think that's right.

If it's really so then I can see why. Bigger bass means it gets easier to mask imperfections in the rest of the sonic reproduction, not by much if tuned right, but will still happen to a certain extent. Making it seem to be more capable than it's bigger brother the 850
