The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

I use a Formula S and Powerman for my main rig with the Abyss/Susvara/Sol P. In my office I use a Mytek Brooklyn Bridge and I think it is an excellent all in one unit (streamer, DAC, amp). I like the sound of all 3 of my cans out of it. Sure it does not have the nuance of the Formula S/Powerman + my wavedream and a bunch of fairly expensive cabling, But the performance per $ of the Mytek far exceeds that of my main rig. I am sure they can be found for a great price used.

I know this headphone is known for its relentless level of detail but I find in a good handful of tracks there is a constant 16-19khz buzz that plays throughout the entirety of the song. I can't help but wonder if the mixers and producers just failed to detect these sounds. There's no way they would let some of this stuff pass if they could actually hear it themselves.

Maybe post which tracks you’re hearing this buzz, so others could confirm it or narrow it down to a chain issue?

Could be difficult for me to show since I'm not on any streaming services. But I'll sift through and see what pops up. You can upload brief audio clips here, right?

Selling my about 1 yr old Abyss TC along with the SC cable and Abyss headphone stand. Original receipt included, first and only owner, pristine condition.

By the way who here when receiving a new gear component, drops everything and spends whole day listening to it going back and forth between old gear and new dropping everything such as work, fatherhood, being a husband, being a human being, etc.

*raises hand*

With the exception of the Phi TC version which model would you say is 2nd best? original, Phi, Phi CC?

Phi = Phi CC in terms of sound.
The difference between them is not that huge (i had a Phi and now a TC, mostly a bit refined).
The most important thing are the new pads.

Would the Burson Soloist 3xp GT be a good match for the Phi TC? My Cayin HA-3A is underpowered apparently threrefore, I wanted to know some good options for amps once I get the headphone. My max budget would be £2000 for a new amp and the Burson is selling for around £1600 2nd hand.

I personally enjoy the pairing! Currently running it on mid-gain between 40-65 volume. There's plenty of power. If you do catch one 2nd hand grab it with the 5A supercharger, it makes quite a difference with the sound quality. It's been on my table for over a year and have enjoyed every minute thus far. Plus the vertical stand gives me enough room to store headphones on the same counter.

I listen to 1266 on low gain at 90-95% volume. This is possible due to the connection to Holo May via XLR. The cleanest and fastest sounding 1266 gives it to low gain. On the mid gain, the sound is a little softer, the bass impact is not as articulate as we would like. On high gain, the sound is aggressive.
When used with any DAC, the Soloist can make the 1266 sound good enough.

1266 from Violectric HPA 550 sound even faster. Punch at low frequencies is so strong, fast, articulated that sometimes it seems ... that a little more and knock out. I always try to hold on to the armrests of the chair, just in case. :gs1000smile:

A list of some more budget orientated amps around £2000 would be helpful to me :sleepy::sweat_smile:
