The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

I'm still enjoying SU 1.3.3, certainly. Just found DOC2008's Sound Explosion whilst looking through the mods thread, so I'll give that a try too. Takes me back, seeing a ROM based on 1.2.9 with the old splash screen typeface!

Sorry if I didn`t notice but what IEMs are You using with DX50?

Comparing SQ is quite hard and requires "ear-training". I recommend to use same song and loop it for 15-20min, then calmly change to another source (use source-switch if possible) and You should notice differences more easily. Also, recommend to do it in silent environment.

Btw, I found SUEX from my desk PC and can upload it for You next week :wink:

How do these compare to the dx80? I'm not sure which one to go for

If You can get used one for ~100$ then I would take DX50. Why?
* Changeable and widely used batteries which are easy to change.
* Mature official firmware with good SQ (lot of modified FW too).
* size.

Technically DX80 is better in every aspect I guess (haven`t heard one myself) but DX50 offers more value for money.

And if You have skills and interest, then hardware can be upgraded for quite little extra cost but result is worth every penny You`ve spent on DX50.

I have only HiFiMan RE-00 (the MassDrop one) as serious IEMs (I guess many would say that they're not serious, but they sound good to me!); I am looking for an affordable used pair of Etymotic ER4s, because I'm comfortable with deep insertion (if you'll pardon the expression - no boasting intended) and feel that I ought to try them.

For full size cans I have Senn HD540 Reference, HD480 (high impedance), Grado SR325e, and HiFiMan HE-400 (series 2) - so a huge range of impedance and sensitivity! Oh, and I came across my old Pioneer SE305s from the late 70s recently - things have moved on in the moving coil department, if not as much in the electrostatic department!

Yes, I'm sure I need more training for objective comparison, but my ears are nearly 60 years old and so cannot realistically make useful objective comparison anyway - sometimes, subjectively, something just leaps out. Thanks for your help.

Yes, SUEX would be good to try, but no hurry. Thanks very much.

I’ve just bought one on eBay as new for under £90 as it looked like a good deal. So to save me reading through all these pages, where do I get the most desirable firmware from? Any other suggestions on how to get the best from this device?

Best firmwares (subjective):
* Sound Unlocked 1.3.3 (no gapless @Flac-only when songs as individual track files)
* SUEX (Sound Unlocked experimental). May crash and after crash needs to be installed again.
* NDFFF (New Docs Favorite Firmware Final)
* iBasso original FW 1.9.5

Hardware upgrade is highly recommended by me. For example,HO opamps I use give out 80mA per channel and sound awesome!

Hi, I've already asked on the dualboot thread but I take advantage of this activity to ask here this Rockbox related question: how can I add a cover view in Rockbox? I mean a Database view that let me go through my albums by sliding their covers.

I tell you what. I bought this dap and then got dx80 on cheap shortly after, and I love dx50 for work. Lovely sound for my metal tendencies. Can't get a personalised wallpaper to work on it though!

Quality ones:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anker-22...343204&hash=item1a3a2df5ae:g:QZkAAOSwgQ9Vu6U0

DO NOT BUY cheaper batteries coming from china/hongkong etc. - most of them are fakes/rebranded old ones.
Anker and polarcell are HQ and proven to last long. Even getting original Samsung battery is sometimes hard (even fakes have original-looking package).
I`ve had some of those cheap ones (golden sticker "3500mAh, kinps 3200mAh and some others) and that high mAh nr. doesn`t mean anything!
Quality ones last about same time but lifetime is longer.

Any idea where I could still get Mini Audio colorful (black & transparent are also ok) silicone cases? Preferrably in EU but any option is ok.
My black one starts to wear out soon.

We have a few of the black silicon cases left. You can email me at paul@ibasso.com or email us at service@ibasso.com for a quote (I don't remember the price right now).
