The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

If form factor is not an issue get the O2. It is the most versatile as far as driving a wide range of phones (1x / 3.5x gain settings) with the options you listed above. It sure is transparent. If you already like how the DX50 sound on HO. O2 will be most likely give you thd same SQ.

I want to thank everyone who gave inputs.
I leaned more and came to the conclusion that the JDS Labs are the sound im aiming for but.. now that i read more, the OBJECTIVE2 sounds more reference mode i want which will give the clarity and sound the 1.33 SU gives and it even comes in a custom version.
Size is what makes the hard choice. I do carry my rig with a bug and than place it on my work desk. - it sounds like the OBJECTIVE2 will do just fine.
inputs will be nice (-:

The O2 works very well (I also occasionally use this combination). If you are after a wide soundstage, I would also look at the Cayin C5.

They are beta drivers and it might not work for everyone`s system. Sorry but until iBasso releases proper drivers for USB-DAC function we probably can`t help You much.

Hi all, I've just read through some post about the custom firmware for DX50, currently not too fond of the sound from the HO, would really want to improve its sound stage and detail.

My setup:
1. DX50 (HO) > Yamaha EPH-100 (HO Low Gain Volume @ 180)
2. DX50 (LO) > Hippo CriCri+ > Yamaha EPH-100 (LO Volume @ 200)
Note: Would really prefer the HO without 3rd party amping.

Few questions:
1. What firmware should I choose? DX90 port or Rockbox?
2. I see there's Rockbox, is that the SU 1.3.3 and 1.3.5 (beta) that everyone is referring to?
3. What improvement of both (DX90 & Rockbox) over the stock DX50 1.5.0?
4. Last but not least, does modded firmware void the warranty? (just a yes or no will do :rolleyes:)

Thank you all in advance for answering my question.

 I was using Sound Unlocked 1.3.3 for some time using Flac, it's very good. But after some evaluation now using:

The NEW DX50 SOUND EXPLOSION 3rd EDITION BY DOC2008

https://mega.co.nz/#!6phFSaLA!6QTEny34lBRsUI4YECzbuKkIlAZ7Vl0JCtkcpZ3bS00

The advantage is that lossy and lossless are supported (without rebooting) and IMO it sounds as good as SU 1.3.3 flac only mode (when using flac). I am using Etymotic ER-4s. (100ohm)

Wow, thanks for the link, DX90 v2.1.0 ported... I'm using the SU 1.3.3 btw, sounds a bit more detail I think, I need a stock DX50 for side by side listening, forgotten about the previous sounds, should've took few minutes listening before switching to SU 1.3.3.
Going to give more listening on SU 1.3.3 before switching to the DOC2008 3rd edition. Hopefully it's marginal enough for me to stick with it. *cross fingers*

Thank you again.

Does it use some kind of menu selection for lossy/lossless swapping? As much as I know this feature can`t be done in "one mode" unless DOC got his hands(brain) somehow into Mango`s original firmware (it`s closed source) to make it automatically swap between decoders depending on file type. And what SU setting did You use when comparing? IRR on/off? CPU setting?

On sound unlocked settings were flac only, IRR on, 312. (I have tested all other settings btw) I have been using SU for quite a while.

No there is no switch to set to Flac only in Docs new firmware and what he has actually done within the firmware is for him to say......'cos I don't know.

All I know is I like it (yes, compared with SU 1.3.3) , there is the detail, soundstage, and separation needed and because I do have some 320 Mp3/m4a as well as FLAC it just is less hassle to stick with this, and I am happy with it for now.

It seems you are happy with SU from reading your posts and perhaps have no need to change, but for me, I still like to explore.

Yeah, I think I have found what`s "right" for my ears and will stick with it. I just was interested how he implemented this lossy/lossless in "one mode".
I know that Dmitry wanted to make that hidden menu available inside Mango UI (without restart) and it should be possible according to him but not changing decoders according to file type automatically. Not sure though.

Thinking about picking one up, curious though if the battery life has improved through the firmware upgrades. Also, has anyone tried this with a 256gb SD card? I have one with a microSD card adapter but I've only tried it with my Galaxy S3.

And finally, the S3 battery fits this correct?

I think FW updates do not extend battery life. Just get better/larger capacity quality battery but it won`t extend playtime very much.
Quote:
  What sort of battery life are people getting using rockbox on the dx50?

I`m not using rockbox (I think SU FW sounds better) but I did battery/playtime test on last page:

Btw, I just finished testing battery time (KINPS 3250mAh) with my DX50 with following settings:

* 11min screen ON time
* gain @ mid
* vol @ 196
* Piston v2.1 16Ohm IEM
* Sound Unlocked 1.3.3 FW @ FLAC-only / irr OFF / CPU - default
edit:
* screen brightness 50

Total straight-on playtime result - 13h 18min

Next up original battery. I`m interested if it will last close to that replacement battery. Actually I`m not going to be
surprised if it even exeeds that playtime since those cheap batteries from china might claim everything on the label which it really is not. If I have time will test also SU @ irr on + CPU @ 312kHz.

Forgot to add that LCD brightness was set to 50 which I use all the time. Bright enough for me even with sunny day (ofc not with direct sunlight at screen).

Edit:

Probably I have to do this test again because I did some reading about Li-Ion battery properties and charging it: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries

I realized that I haven`t been charging my replacement battery as properly as it could be done. Don`t know if it will make any difference but will do some discharge-rest-reload cycles with external charger or player turned off and see if playtime will expand.

More battery tests to follow soon :wink: Atm, I`m testing original battery and seems it is same good as that replacement battery. Will give exact numbers after about 30min.

Edit: LOL , I mixed up batteries. I`m actually testing that KINPS replacement battery again and this time it managed to last 14h 28min.
I don`t know if it is related with proper charging but this time I charged with lower proper voltage (4.35V output) external charger once, then discharged it and recharged it again. Basically more than 1h gain in endurance!

This time settings were like this:

* 12min screen ON time
* gain @ mid
* vol @ 192  (before it was 196 but it`s little difference and with longer listening session I use 192)
* Piston v2.1 16Ohm IEM
* Sound Unlocked 1.3.3 FW @ FLAC-only / irr OFF / CPU - default
* screen brightness 50
