I personally believe it's one of the biggest misconceptions on Head-fi, played out by strong placebo.
Apples stock earbuds are actually very good..
Compared to a lot of other earbuds, that is.

Let's be frank, there's only one place for stock earbuds and that's the bin. Including Samsung's (even though I'm a Sammy fandroid).

Well, in White Lotus' defense, there was one time when Tyll reviewed and measured the frequency response of the ol' Apple earbuds as a tip of the hat to the late Steve Jobs, and he found that, despite major roll-off, the earbuds had one of the flattest frequency responses he'd ever seen in an earbud.
