  The last update disabled the functionality of in-line headphone controller.
It used to work properly.
Tried several.
Anything I can do?
Tried disabling and re-enabling it back.

We have added setting to enable / disable use of in-line remotes on earphones since FW1.1. You can find it from'system setting'--'supports in-line headphone control'. Update:
Installed 2.0. No change.
Downgraded to 1.5. No change initially, then for a few play/pauses it worked and stopped working.
Went back to 2.0. Still no luck.
 
This leads me to suspect there's a hardware issue with the jack. Too bad, it feels sturdy enough, no wiggling or anything. Every connector i plug in stays solid inside. No water damage, i rarely even took it out of the house.
Shame there's no Fiio dealer here to take a look.

The major concern, to me, would be the ability to drive your output device well.  Headphones vary in impedance and sensitivity quite a bit, and that will have a far greater impact on the sound quality than anything else.  I have used mine on line output into a midrange stereo amp, my car system, and headphones ranging from Apple IEMs to A-T and Sony over-ear phones.  It does quite well with all of these.  I suspect, but have not confirmed by testing, that it should perform at least as well as any smartphone in handling a range of output devices, because it has clearly been designed to do so.  Most smartphones are intended for use solely with IEMs, and may have issues when used outside the range of impedance for which they are intended.

First of all, the Fiio X1 puts out so much more power than most phones. So if your headphones need plenty of power, your phone might not give them enough power to be at their best.

You won't get surround sound from any portable DAP that I know of. So just pick one that sounds good without surround sound.

There is no surround because there's no need for it. If your music is flat because of no surround, then your music is very poorly recorded.

You walking around with more than two speakers? No. A portable player is meant to play 2 channel stereo music through stereo headphones. If trying to play surround sound files through 2 channel speakers (headphones) you'll be missing half the encoding, which is why it will sound like crap. Completely unreasonable to expect a portable player to play surround files.
