The FiiO E10K--all-new DAC and amp stages
Aug 10, 2014 at 1:31 AM Post #92 of 1,083
What is the frequency response range of this DAC/Amp? Is it really 20Hz - 20kHz because the E07K goes from 10Hz to 220kHz (taken from Fiio website) I have music that goes higher than 20kHz so will these frequencies be left out. I am really new to the audio world and have had no experience with DAC/Amps yet so I am sort of clueless :/

Have your hearing tested or do a sine wave sweep. See if you can hear 20,000hz. I know I can't nor do I have a desire to. What voice or musical instrument goes that high?  Unless you're a dog you're not hearing anything above it anyway fwir.

I do actually hear that high. No louder than 21kHz though. I have tried signal generators. But I have music (mainly metal) that the cymbals extend higher than 20kHz to ranges of 21kHz to 22kHz. It is not only me I have tested with a few of my friends. There is a better ring off into the distance than a sample that is restricted to 20kHz. I have done ABX testing already and it is not placebo so this issue is a great concern to me.

But how many db do you need to set it as for you to hear it? Not anything that you would normally hear in any music recording.

I would estimate around 70 to 80 dB and I hear the extra ring from cymbals. I adore that extra ring from the cymbals. It adds a certain sparkle that envelopes me in the music. I know it is picky but it matters to me.

I'd like to ask some questions regarding the E10K.

I wanna know how it fares with the E09K, I know one is a DAC/amp while the other is purely an amp.

My setup will be the mbp retina 13" - > either one Fiio > ESW-9 and XBA-4
I don't plan to use the E09K docked though.

Which will sound better? How does the E10K fare against the E09K.

Plus, issit possible to use the E10K like this?
mbp > dell U2414H (via mini-dp or HDMI) > E10K (via usb since i'll be hooking the usb hub on the dell to my mbp)

Short answer: E10K.

Long answer: Neither of your headphone needs that kind of power of E09K, and E09K will have too high an output impedance for XBA-4.

For Dell U2414H - you need to use it as an USB hub, so you need to connect it to your MBP via USB as well, then the E10K to one of the monitor's USB port, except for the one that is for charging only.

From my experience with X5 as a DAC, if you connect your DAC to usb hub or monitor or any other usb that connected to MBP, your sound will be a less detailed. Will be better if you connect it direct to MBP.
