However, when I listen to very high resolution files, particular DSD or 192kHz, it skips every few seconds, for a few seconds. It's like there are read issues. Is there a way I can mitigate this?
It can be a "green" HDD that goes to sleep much too soon, or a USB cable (any part of the chain) that is not so good.

Frankly, I tried a 3.5'' HDD only once and too long ago, but I've had great experience and zero problems listening from 2.5'' WD My Passport Ultra HDDs, up to 3TB. Also I've heard about bad experience with Seagate HDDs exactly because of power downs on idle mode.

I newer tried to format HDDs to FAT32: my disks are either NTFS or exFAT.

Well, with NTFS, you may also try "my" firmware builds, because I've disables last used file timestamp updates in NTFS driver, which also may lead to problems.

So the Dx90 can actually power portable hard drives? Or did using the passport require a hub? I went for the Seagate specifically because it has its own power.

I'll see if I can find some power options on my computer. But I didn't quite understand - are you recommending I format the drive to FAT32?

No, it can't. I use external power supply. But even with DX80, which provides enough current via OTG to power a 3TB HDD, I use an external power supply.

It can be a hub (better), or a USB cable with a second connector for additional power supply.
are you recommending I format the drive to FAT32?

No, I don't.

This is good stuff. I'd like to hear more about which drives have worked for people and how they set it up. Power supplies, formatting, etc. proud dx90 owner here. Would be great to be able to connect a hard drive for trips away from home.

I wonder if using a powered hub with a powered hard drive would help.

A development! My computer has the same problems with the hard drive. It's likely a corrupt piece of crap. Reformatting to exFAT, we'll see what happens.

So I purchased a Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB drive:
http://www.seagate.com/ca/en/consumer/backup/expansion-portable/

And a D-Link 4-port Superspeed USB 3.0 Hub:
http://ca.dlink.com/products/connect/4-port-superspeed-usb-3-hub/

And the iBasso won't recognize the drive plugged into the hub or plugged into the player directly. It works on a computer though. What the hell am I doing wrong?

I've never tried plugging an HD on USB but your HD seems to have only one usb port.
What I understand is that it works when your HD has an usb port plugged to DX90 and an other port from HD to power supply at the same time to have enough juice to power the HD and not by DX90 alone.
Is that correct, guys?

Do you have an example of such a hard drive? Also, what the heck does a powered hub do then?

By example, that kind of drive, power supply port to wallwart and usb port to dx90.
https://www.amazon.com/Elements-2-5-External-Hard-Drive/dp/B004O79AME

The hub adds 4 usb ports for the device it's plugged in.

my dx90 stops producing sound.. no sound at all even at 255 volume.. both the hp and line out but all other functions are still working.

Can anyone help me on this. TIA!

Have you tried a factory reset under advanced settings? Also do a firmware update again.  If that doesn't work you can try the Batch Tool that has a link on the first page of the DX80 thread to do a fresh FW update. The BT requires a Windows machine and the instructions on how to use it are in the download.
