Most any OTG device that doesn't have a built-in battery (like the E18) will need a battery.

It depends on the USB power capability of your particular android device. The Note 4 doesn't require external power - I run the GO450 directly off it's micro-USB port.

The GEEK Stream is essentially a GO with a battery which should provide an even cleaner sound on top of not draining your phone.

However there is a battery Y-cable work around that can be found in the geek out thread.

That's what I was referring to, you can hook it up with a Y cable, but, as I mentioned, that makes your GO, DAP/phone/other source, and the power supply 3 pieces to carry, OK on a desk, but not really a portable solution.
