You didn't mention a price but this is a great deal for an iBasso DX90 kit:

Rockbox and Lurker0 mod (both included in one simple firmware file flash) make this a truly outstanding unit for the money.

Thanks for the info! This could work for me. My budget is about $500 USD. I'd prefer to spend less though, so I've been prowling for deals.

Found a seller on Amazon selling the FiiO X5 for $280 after shipping. I think I might just go that route. They say it was a customer return that's in "Like New" condition and they have a seller rating of 99%. Seems like it might be worth it, but if anyone knows any better, please let me know. Here's the link if anyone is interested. The seller is ProStudio Sound and Music.

There is a DX50 too that does Rockbox for $230: http://www.amazon.com/iBasso-DX50-Mastering-Authorized-Distributor/dp/B00J6RVQJM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1408955807&sr=1-1&keywords=ibasso+dx50

Pretty hard to beat the dual Sabre DAC's of the DX90 though.

Both DX's use similar removable batteries as a Galaxy S3.

Personally, I can see both sides of the argument. Sure, some people are on tight budgets and are looking for a headphone that they will keep for quite some time, so buying second-hand through the classifieds from a seller with good reputation is a good way to go. For some, they like the confidence of buying from a good company like RazorDog. I've bought several pairs of headphones from Brian and I like the peace of mind that comes with buying from an authorized dealer. I've also bought from the classifieds and like knowing that I am getting gear for the lowest possible price.

There's really no need to start debates over the correct purpose of the deals forum as it is different for different people. I don't mind at all getting email updates for deals that I am not interested. I would rather read through a handful of posts with only one or two deals I might be interested in than no deals at all. At the risk of being controversial, let's try to remember that we are all here because we love audio/headphones and that we are something of a community - there's no need to bicker.

To make this worthwhile, SonicElectronix is having an anniversary sale with 10, 15, 20, and 25% off coupons for a number of products. Not a lot there that interests me, but I'm sure with some sifting there are deals to be had.

I purchased my X5 from this seller and it looked completely new when I received it. If you're looking for a good DAP for the price, this is definitely one. Only problem is that you need to buy a microSD card or two to go along with it.

OK, quick question about rockbox in relation to the DX50/90, I was under the impression it down sampled to 16/48. Is that true? And if that's the case, wouldn't that just ruin the value of those daps?

Yes it down samples

I don't really use rockbox on my dx90, but playing mp3s on the stock firmware sounds better than playing it on something like an ipod or a smartphone.

Thanks for the reassurance. I just bought the X5 from them, along with a 128GB & 64GB SD card.

Awesome! At that price, they're pretty tough to beat. I love mine and use them as my portable pair that I can toss into a bag.

Not necessarily, most all lossless CD rips are 16/44.....with high rez rips (DVD-Audio, Bluray audio), yes this is an issue, however, I've had 16/44 rips that sound better than some 24/96 one's. Mastering is much more important. The nice thing about the newest headwhacker Rockbox is that it includes the Lurker0 mod (which is an optimized version of the official newest iBasso FW). So, you can easily dual boot into the optimized 2.1 FW or into RB........best of both worlds and retains the ability for high rez playback........sorry this is off topic.

BTW, TTVJ has a few pair of HE-500 for $499: http://www.ttvjaudio.com/HE500_Planar_Magnetic_headphone_used_p/use0000987.htm
