Thanks so much to topgunsphd and Meewoo - the Fostex Th500rp have such mixed reviews, but I took a punt.
Got them last night - had time to listen a bit - oh my - they are seriously engaging - so wonderfully textured and luscious - do you like cheescake, whiskey and warm slippers? these are the 'cans for you. (Translation - if you love the Sennheiser HD700 avoid the Th500rp like boiled cabbage; if you really like the Nighthawks - keep a look out for the Th500rp - they're absolutely scrumptious!).
Caveats - all listening done with my ears (of course, ha!); also they need good amping and source; they don't show potential from daps (well not the Pono); they have a very intimate soundstage; and sound very different from HE560 (the only other planar I've spent time with).

Sorry for slightly off topic - but if any more Fostex Th500rp go on sale, they are worth considering.

Yes, bad review put me off too and i actually gave a listen in local shop and it is not bad at all. It is not spectacular but not bad either. Keen to purchase if there is another chance.

Seeing as it's back, I'll share this and try to be brief. I got a pair from the initial sale. Open box maybe but everything seems very new to me. Cans themselves are nicely built. They sound nice, but for open cans they sound decidedly closed. Like, muffled to a minor degree. Other then that though, they sound very nice for the sale price.
