(As RERO mentioned, they also have the ES-FC300 in several colors for $40.)
I just bought the ES-HF300, mainly because the headphone connectors apparently are MMCX.
I'm planning on using these phones with a balanced MMCX iem PONO cable (Trinity Audio has a good price on these).
This will give me a pair of balanced portable 'phones - so excited!!

Even the $40 version uses the MMCX connection cables. I think the differences are  audiophile cable materials on some versions as well as IOS remote control on some. Besides the cables and how you feel about red/violet/white they are the same.  I agree the not available silver/brown padding are the sharpest. 
 
The FC cable alone sells for $50 shipped on eBay...so a good deal all around. I really like mine (HF version)

All these Onkyo headphones mentioned in these deal posts (ES-HF300 and ES-FC300) have the MMCX connectors (even the iems). The only difference between the $40 and $50 ones seems to be the fancier cable on the $50 HF version.

Well, and depending on how you feel about Violet it may be well worth it to pay $10 more.
 
This was mentioned, but Innerfidelity's review is informative and I think correct in the advantages and shortfalls.
At the time of the review they ranged from $150-$180 and were well worth it, so at $40-50 a great deal.
