The Audio Technica W3000ANV Thread
Sep 26, 2013 at 11:20 AM Post #661 of 1,529
I had both. I thought the W1000X had greater genre compatibility. To me, the W3000ANV featured far greater clarity (my W1000X was stock but with J$ Beyerdynamic pads), and when it worked well with a song it was beautiful (e.g. acoustic, female vocals, club jazz, et alia).

The W1000X is also more durable (at least as far as wood headphones can be, anyway). The Echizen lacquer on the W3000ANV is very susceptible to micro-scratching even with gentle handling.

I posted this in the W1000X thread, but it pertains here too-- I've listened to the Grandiosos and liked them quite a bit. I've since acquired the Japans though, and of course like them a lot too. Yet, I still have a desire to get the Grandioso. I found it very impressive for its price point; it was just a lot of engaging fun to listen to (and they're of course visually wonderful). Anyone else have this seemingly irrational impulse? Lol. Maybe it's just the collector in me coming out, I don't know. Anyone here have both, and still enjoy both? Or would it be just disappointing to go back to the lower model?

I have EXACTLY the same urge for the Grandiosos. They are visually so beautiful and classy. But how many AT W's does one really need?

Just an update, in a unexpected turn of events I was able to solve all my ear-cup-pad-seal and fit problems, at least in one position.

In past, even with rubberband in middle, I could not achieve proper seal and so bass was weak and tonality was off unless I pressed cups against my ears.

Then by chance I was tired and laid down on my pillow and suddenly achieved a perfect seal. No longer were the cans resting loosely on my head.
They were in perfect position and the weight was on the pillow, as the back of the cups rested on the pillow.
So laying down I have no problems, wich is fine by me.

Also has anyone noticed the clean air presence of the trebles?
How about vocals "floating" apart from the music?
Audio Technica majic?

don't think that's what the designers had in mind. mine clamp so no problems with getting a seal here. these can sound bass lite.

I couldn't resist the temptation and finally I got a brand new W3000ANV with the hard protection box from the local shop yesterday.

As the slogan says: "Welcome to Head-fi, Sorry for your wallet." (seems like it's not head-fi but "curse-fi")

My slogan would be: "I'm not the first one, but definitely not the last one as well though."

I'm always curious to hear by myself how good the W3000ANV is and I'm really happy and get excited now. The only ATH headphone I've got is M50 way back few years ago but the clamping is too much for me and it sit still in the headphone bag for quite a while.

I've just unboxed the W3000ANV and even haven't try put it on my head yet (I'm bit worry about the fit also) and I'd wait for tomorrow a whole day free for listening.

I'm curious to know the first song you play with the W3000ANV, if you still remember.

I'm struggle to choose from my own favourites:
female vocal: Adele or Celine Dior
Jazz: Laura Fygi or Norah Jones, Diana Krall or even Susan Wong (if you know who she is)
Classical: Erich Kunzel's Ein Straussfest or Senji Ozawa's Four Seasons / 2002 New Year's Concert
J-Pop: Ayumi Hamasaki or Kana Nishino
EDM: Daft Punk or YAZOO or Depeche Mode
Rock (Classics): Eagles, Queen, U2

Any recommendation would be welcomed & appreciated.

p.s. I've thinking about my next amp purchase now (budget within $1500, curse-fi again), HA-02 is hot favorite for W3000ANV I've read so far. I'm very interested in Woo Audio WA7, any one have the combo could share the experience, or any other good choices??

Thanks TJ and Arcamera for the W3000ANV/WA7 combo endorsement.

Actually I've auditioned the WA7 w/ Ultrasone ED8 few months ago for about 5-10 minutes in the local shop, as I remember correctly the WA7 provide the vocal presence image more solid and overall giving more airy sound. At that time the delivery lead time of WA7 was about 4-6 weeks to get the real thing on hand (I've read the WA7 thread and other buyers also have to face it.) so I didn't make the decision to get one but I think it would be a right time for the purchase. Just wonder if the optional tube pair is still available or not.

So I'd listen the W3000ANV few hours later once my stuffs on hand all settled. can't wait. lol

What about this sensational musical piece - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jZKhC7CtEI - good one to evaluate the low and high frequencies and the speed and the dynamics of your W3000ANV; plus the music is great I have to admit, I have to, even though I do not listen to this type of music.
My first pick of a song to try my then new W3000ANV was very beautiful one by EmmyLou Harris, Boulder to Birmingham - 1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9A48houSs0 [Album version]  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTry1yKvxZM [Concert version, adjust the sound level]. When I evaluate any headphones I always choose EmmyLou's song first. I love her music and her singing and I know the shades of her voice the best of all. I use it as a reference voice so it is relatively easy for me to check the tonality of any new headphones. This song is good to check the top end of the frequency spectrum for any harsh peaks, to check the presentation of the harmonic [and disharmonic] overtones of women's voices. It comes from a digitally not well mastered album that has somewhat shrill treble. The voice in this case is also doubled in harmony singing so there are the overtones of two voices.  W3000ANV covers up the sharp treble of the song pretty well; there is a slight peak but it is tolerable. There are acoustic instruments playing in this song. W3000ANV and the female vocals with the acoustic sounds is a match made in heaven.
The second songs to check the bass, how the headphones handle it were
A : the song by Dean BrodyTrail in Life - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODbBHYIQcGg .
B : the song by the group Shaye, Tupelo Honeyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IEfDoY5bZo . Both songs have a difficult for headphones bass line [to my ears going down to about 40-50 Hz of frequency], Tupelo Honey bass line even more so, resonant and lingering and difficult enough so that it separates the good headphones from the bad ones. The bad ones present muddy and inarticulate bass when playing these pieces. W3000ANV handled the bass line very well, it was resonating and floating and spread out but not turning to mush. One could still hear vibrations, the grain of the bass notes.
The third song, to check the speed and the dynamics of W3000ANV, was the song by Brad Paisley, 'Welcome to the future' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0Yg9wjctRw .
And the fourth one for the pleasure of it. It has an orchestra, a piano, an electric guitar and a fabulous vocal performance. Faith Hill, When the lights go down.  - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxUUNsE9lWE
I used those four songs to quickly evaluate W3000ANV on the day of the arrival.

A selection of songs to choose from. Have a fabulous time with your W3000ANV.

Here is my endorsement. W3000 + Svetlana 2. But really, if you go through the thread you see a few amps mentioned several times. It would be great for you if you could audition them before buying.

From what I have read, W3000ANV is exceptionally well paired with Yamy HA-02, Zana Deux SE, Svetlana 2 and AT-HA5000ANV. It should work very well with WA6/WA6SE as well.
My own experience says - Svetlana 2 + W3000ANV is match made in heaven. I haven't heard it with any other amp (from those I mentioned above), but I don't think it can get any better than this. Maybe one day I may get "bored" (read too accustomed) with this combo, but I think I am settled for really long time :)

cky8 is right - hearing something before you buy it is great idea, but not possible everytime (in some countries practically impossible). Also don't forget to bring as many of your gear to audition as you can, not just headphones, some components may affect sound significantly (like DACs, power conditioners, even cables can do some business - but that is whole another discussion).

How did you get the hard protection case?  I've looked a few times online and can't seem to find the hard case similar to the one that came with W5000's for sale by itself.
