Found out today that someone has built one of my back-burner projects, so I was able to order one, rather than having to design & build it myself.

I had been wanting to modify the circuitry of the Little Bear B4-X, to make it fully balanced, from input to output. It turns out that the KAEI TAP-1S is basically what I wanted to build. It has 4 tubes in the preamp section, and 2 socketed op-amps in the driver section - but I think it's using discrete transistors in the output stage, since it can deliver up to ~2.45 W/Channel when connected to its desktop power supply.

There is another "portable" amp out there that has similar specs. It's at an unobtainable price though.

I had seen the Cayin C9 before, and it does look nice - but I wasn't prepared to spend that much money.
