The Astell & Kern AK240

My 240 balanced port is acting up on me again, if I twist the balanced plug a little bit, I hear static noise from left ear, it happens with all my balanced cables,  this one is a replacement unit, the first one did the exact same thing, I am little disappointed, I only had the second one for 2 months, maybe 20 hours listening. When I first got it, it was all good.

Anybody else have this problem?  The way to check is, play a song turn the volume down to zero, then twist the balanced plug left or right.

Thanks

I can't believe it, mine is as well. It was fine until tonight. Really sucks. I literally just updated my firmware and it started doing it.

I contacted Moon Audio for balanced cables and Drew over there said they were having lots of problems. Sounds like a bad connector purchase on the AK end...

I have "reinforced" mine, which hopefully will stop excess torque etc.:

I have recently managed to solve the problem of my "faulty" balanced output socket on my AK240 . I bought my AK240 in March of this year to use with my JH Audio 16Pro (with FP) and immediately ordered from a reputable US company specialising in high-end audio cables a 2.5mm TRRS cable so that I could listen to the unit through the balanced socket. When the cable arrived it immediately started crackling in the left channel whenever it was moved or touched whilst in the socket-I sent it back and it was replaced-the replacement cable was better but not perfect and for the next few months I "put up" with having to listen to my AK240 trying hard to not move the unit in any way so as to make sure there was no crackling. This was rather frustrating. I then read about the AK240 crackling balanced socket issue on this forum a few weeks ago and a couple of people praising Ted's Allen's balanced 2.5mm TRRS cable so I ordered one of those. The cable eventually arrived last week and I'm very happy to say that it has fixed the crackling issue and I am now able to listen to the AK240 without the annoying crackle in the left channel. The gold 2.5mm TRRS socket of Ted's cable and the quality of the cable itself is first arte and I'm very happy with it and wish that I had started with it in the first place. Thank you Ted. I haven't downloaded the new AK240 software so don't know whether that would make a difference to my current crackle free listening.

I just plug the balanced plug directly into the AK 2.5mm socket,  what is that adapter for?

What is this adapter for? I just plug the balanced plug directly into the AK 2.5mm socket,  do I have to have this adapter to achieve balanced out?

The dual plug is suppose for the 2x XLS out and not for a 4 pin XLS.  If you have RSA or a 4 pin XLS, then all you need is a patch from the 2.5mm 4 poll balance out.  However, if you need a 2x XLS out, then you will need the dual plug adapter.

For headphones, all you need is the 2.5mm TRRS smaller connector.
What I did was to take a dummy 3.5mm plug for stability only - stopping all the noise and my own concern about the 2.5mm plug bending/breaking itself, or the socket: Plug them both into the AK and then place a small piece of wood between for a near-perfect spacing. I then used heatshrink tubing to bind them whole bundle together. The inner wall of the tubing had the equivalent of hotglue in it, so this worked great.

while it works, but you still have a broken socket AK, not to mention it looks cumbersome, this is not the way it meant to be. Iriver should come up with a solution, I am on my second one, same exact problem, I doubt the next one might be the same.

I have the Headphone Lounge cable terminated in 2.5 trrs, and I heard statics with this cable plug into the AK socket, it has nothing to do with cables, I have tried 5 balanced cables, they all have statics if you touch the plug or turn it slightly.

Nothing to do with the cable as I have static on my 240 but not my 120ii.

Thank god my AK240 doesn't have this static problems whenever I twist my 2.5mm TRRS balanced plug from my JH Roxanne I hear nothing.

Is there a lot of faulty AK240's that have been sold to customers with these static problems on the 2.5mm TRRS sockets?

I hear no static noise from the 2.5mm socket, and I plug and unplug from it every single day.

My AK240 belongs to the very first batch, bought it in Feb. I wonder if it would have anything to do with firmware version.
